  • Which specific Symantec AV?

It's possible that the firewall is getting in the way of the machine validating, but if there are no more machines also having problems behind the firewall, it sounds as if you may have a malware infection - I suggest that you scan the machine with multiple AV and malware scanners.

  • I guess my next question would have to be, "What then could cause it to say it is not genuine in control panel/system?

  • I don't know what you are referring to. it should say your windows is activated

if you are referring to the blue ask for genuine windows logo on the lower right corner, that is normal.

if your windows was not genuine you would see a black screen with a not genuine notice.

  • The blue logo on the bottom right says not genuine. Sometimes the screen is black with the not genuine notice.

  • post the diagnostic while the notice is showing. that might tell us something.

I suspect you may have a race condition where the system is competing for resources. if the software protection loses the race it will throw up a notice.

    what antivirus are you running?

  • We are running Symantec antivirus. The diag that I posted was run while the notice was showing. Note that it is not causing any issues with the computer running. It is kind of slow but does run production. It is also behind a sonicwall. I was told that this problem has been going on for a while.
