Can't Delete File From WHS....Please Help. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Long story short...I had a failing drive on my MSS, I was able to remove it but now have a problem which I would think relates to this but can't be certain. I continue to get a message that says I have file conflicts, there are 5 files that relate to iTunes which are unimportant as iTunes would rebuild the album art cache if the directorty is deleted. The problem is I can't delete them, when I try I get an error saying that I can't delete the file. I have spent a lot of time searching the net for a solution and despite trying several things I can't get them deleted. As suggested by a link I found I did a check disk on the files and below are the results. Please forgive some of the ugly commands and errors as it has been many years since I have worked with DOS...any help would be appreciated as this is very frustrating.

I do see one place below that says "5 unindexed files processed" which is the same number of files I am having problems with...does this mean anything?

First, just to eliminate the obvious, did you try deleting through the UNC path (\\server\[sharename])?  If so, what is the exact error message you get?  Also, what are the component numbers in the Console (Settings button, Resources tab)?  And it doesn't look like you ran chkdsk on each drive in your server.  Please see the FAQ post:  How to check all the drives in your server for errors for details on how to do that.

  • Thank you very much for the reply.  I am not certain how I would go about trying to delete through the UNC path, can you please help with that and I will give it a try.

The UNC path is what you would use when you add files to your server (like I said before, the path is \\server\[sharename], replacing the word "server" with the name of your server).  For example, how did you get your music collection to your server?  Have you been adding files to your server from a client PC (XP, Vista, 7), or some other method?

  • I was unable to delete the file from the UNC path, I have tried from both the client, which is my desktop PC and also through Remote Desktop Connection to the server.  I ran an error check as outlined in the FAQ above and no error messages were noted.  Using the WHS Clean Up tool found here I was able to delete two of the files but 3 still remain.

That error message suggests that the file is in use (meaning some PC or other network device is still connected to your server).  Try rebooting your server (which will disconnect anything that is still pulling from your shares), then try deleting those files again.

  • I have rebooted at least 10 times over the last few days as I have attempted to correct this problem and have had no success.  I did try again a few minutes ago and again I was unable to delete the files.  I have tried to delete the entire directory and get this error:

    http://blackcows.com/error.bmp

I have a Sonos wireless music system which accesses the music share on the WHS so I did power that down for the first time today but still no success.  I don't have an elaborate network in my house so not sure what else could be accessing the share but if I understand your message correctly a restart should exclude that problem and still no sucess so that must not be an issue.

  • I know this is totally unsupported and could cause damage to your WHS, so proceed with caution.

I had two files I could not delete. I downloaded and installed Move on Boot file utility, installed from the server desktop, selected the files, rebooted the server and they were gone. Have not used the utility since, no need! Have it delete on reboot and you shouldn't have any problems. I did all of this from the server desktop via RDP. It should install the utilities as GiPo@FileUtilities in the Start\Program Files.

It's a handy utility to have around for Windows and as far as I can tell, causes no ill effects on WHS. Been installed on my server for over a year.

    Good Luck!

You might check the FAQ post:  How do I resolve file conflicts and see if any of the steps there help (especially the "The group or resource...." part).
