Fix It Troubleshooter refuses to run RRS feed

  • Question

  • I get the following message: "Fix it troubleshooting cannot continue because an error occurred. This troubleshooter does not apply to this computer."

The troubleshooter in question was http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/2/3/52323091-3F94-4076-B544-F76B9B1247BD/Mats_Run.WindowsUpdate.exe.

The reason behind using the troubleshooter was a repeated failure to install windows update KB976902. This update fails with code 80070026. Clicking on the failed update entry in Windows Update produces a window with the error code and a link to the troubleshooter -- the one that fails.

    I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits (Version 6.1.7600 Build 7600) on a DELL laptop (Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 520  @ 2.40GHz, 2400 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)) BIOS Version/Date: Dell Inc. A06, 11/20/2010. 8GB RAM, 280GB system partition (52GB free).

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Best,

    Chris

  • I can't get the "Fix It" to install. It keeps telling me that the connection to server was reset. I was hoping to use the program because I can't re-install Microsoft Security Essentials after a system restore. Microsoft tried helping me through remote assistance and was unable. I don't want to re-install the OS because I have some nice programs on the machine. This is not an isolated problem, it happens a lot on XP when you do a system restore. Anyone who might know why this is happening or how to "fix it" I'd really appreciate your input.

                                                       Thanks, PlanB

  • Dear Chris,

Thanks for your interesting in Microsoft Fix it Center(Beta).

I did a test and found that the troubleshooter you provided can be run on my Win7 64 bit machine, so could you please provide the error code to me. You can get the error code by the following steps.

    1. Click Menu->Run, input "eventvwr" in the Open textbox, click Ok.

    2. In the left panel of Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, select Application, then find the error event log and copy the error code to me.

  • Sam,

Thank you for the swift reply. I found the following error in the event viewer at the following location: Applications and Services Logs/Microsoft/Windows/WindowsUpdateClient/Operational. I hope this helps; happy to do anything else at my end.

  • Hi Chris,

Thank you for response. Besed on the error code you pasted, Windows can't update due to a failed download. I suggest you run the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Contro Panel according to the below steps:

    1. In the Control Panel(view by large icons), select Troubleshooting, click View all on the left panel, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter.

    2. Try to Update Windows again.

If this is not helpful, you can refer to the link http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/57a43d64-6006-44c9-a4da-e830beb3bb94.

Please let me know if any question about this issue, thanks.

  • Sam,

Thanks again for your swift reply. Windows Update downloads and installs successfully and all kinds of updates; it's just that one KB update that repeatedly fails.

I did run the WU Troubleshooter -- it came back with nothing. Report follows. The only strange thing (perhaps) is the "Architecture: amd64" when I have an Intel i5 processor. Could that be a symptom of the underlying issue?

Meanwhile, I'll try the steps in the link you gave.

    Best,

    Chris

  • Hello Sam,

A message you left after this one seems to have been deleted. It asked me to download and run 3 tools. malwarebyte, SUPERAntiSpyWare, and a scanner on live.com, to be run in safe mode. I did the first 2: no issue; the third one failed because of error code 0x0C600C03. A preliminary search seems to indicate that this scanner is not suited for 64 bit systems.

At any rate, my system seems OK, but WindowsUpdate is still unable to install KB976902, and the WindowsUpdate troubleshooter is still having the same issue.

If someone is interested at MS, I'd be happy to provide a core dump or any other diag data they need. At my end, unless this becomes a burning issue again, I will have to stop spending time on this.

    Best,

    Chris

    Best,

    Chris
