Vista OEM and new Hard Disk RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Vista Business OEM version.

I would like to upgrade my hard disk with a larger one.

Can I use a backup image of entire old hd made with Acronis software backup to transfer Vista from old hd to new hd without reinstalling it? Could I have problem with license activation?

If  I re-install Vista over new HD  Shell I be able to activate Vista OEM with new HD ?

    thank you very much

    Massimo

  • Hi maxcammy,

If you make a Full disk image on the new hard drive, it should work, but I can not be positive as I'm not familure with that backup software.

If Vista came pre-installed on that computer, it should re-activate itself without issue (as long as you have not changed out the motherboard.

If Vista did not come pre-installed, you will most likely need to reactivate by phone. when you call, you will first hear an Automated Voice that will try to Activate Vista for you. If the Atomated Voice gives you an option to talk to a Live Activation Rep, select that option. If not, do not enter any numbers. This should force the Automated Voice to transfer you to a Live Activation Rep. Trying to Activate thru the Automated Voice will not work, in your case, only thru the Live Activation Rep will your Activation be successful.

  • Rest assured. It doesn't work. Over the weekend I attempted to upgrade my 120g hdd on my HP 6510b laptop with Vista business to a 500g drive. 1st attempt was cloning the drive using Acronis. The computer boots fine but it will not update via microsoft update.

Then I tried a full install with the oem discs that came with the laptop. It got all the way to it's first bootup and said "this version of Microsoft windows is not compatible with your current hardware configuration.

I put my old drive back in and it works fine. This is total BS that we can't upgrade a hard drive on a system we paid for.
