Live OneCare and Windows Home Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to find information about if (and when) Microsoft will release a specialised version of Windows Live OneCare for its Windows Home Server. At the moment I am using OneCare on three of my client systems and “avast! WHS Edition” on my home server. When I would go for the “avast! Pro Family Pack” I would get 1 WHS and 10 client licenses and have the possibility to control al my systems from the WHS console. I would then drop OneCare of course! F-Secure has a similar offering.

I would like Windows Live OneCare to also include support for Microsoft Windows Home Server so that I can manage al my systems (including the server) from the WHS console. Is there any change this would happen in the foreseeable future?

  • This has been a pretty common request and the current answer is that there has been nothing announced.

Logically, I think we may see this in the future, but not before WHS gets its next major upgrade. Windows Live OneCare for Server is currently available, but it only runs on 64 bit Server 2008. WHS is 32 bit Server 2003 based. Rumor has it that the next version of WHS will be 64 bit and be based on the 2008 code.

  • Is there any suggestions you can give for some one running 2 Vista Ultimate PC's, 1 XP PC, 1 XP Laptop, 1 WHS, and 1 Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone.

Just like the other contributor, I'm looking for a single Anti-virus/Spy-ware solution that I can run on all my devices, including the WHS but manage centrally.

On a somewhat related note, when is the new version of WHS do to be released?  Currently I'm running an eval copy and really like it, so I plan on buying the product.  But I would prefer to buy the 64-bit version.

  • Choosing a security vendor to cover all of your PCs and the WHS box would be a personal choice. If you wish to use WHS as the starting point for managing the solution on the PCs, check over at the WHS forums for advice. You may want to consider Avast as they have a server package and also PC packages. It is a decent product on the PCs and one I generally recommend to people looking for a free solution (not the WHS product).

I don't know when we'll expect v2 of WHS. Microsoft has not announced any plans as yet.

  • Same boat here, is it out yet? Wanting an all in one solution manged form the WHS console. I actually bought onecare thinking it would and found out post payment that it would not install on the WHS OS. Hopefully Micrososft will see a need, fill a need.

  • Since OneCare's end of life has been announced, I do not expect to see any solution offered for WHS from OneCare, unfortunately. Morro will be targeted at PCs, not servers, so I don't expect to see that as a possible solution, either.
