WIN XP PRO Won't pass validation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Topic says it all.
2 years ago, I was in the army and the harddrive in my Dell laptop collapsed.
(Win XP Pro SP1 was on the laptop when I bought it directly from dell, and the product key is still on a label on the bottom here.) Label says Win xp pro and Dell
I was far away from both internet and support lines at the time, but needed my computer so one of my friends lend me his XP PRO SP2 install disc.
Only problem was that when I had it installed, it would not accept my product key.
Since I had a paid genuine product key that suddenly would not work, I helped myself to a new key from a key generator.
All was fine until now, and when I follow Microsoft's instuctions to change the key back to what it says on the sticker, it still wont accept it.
So here I am, with a paid product, a trick key installed and a Valid key that Microsoft won't accept.
    Any tips?

  • Roy,

If the Product Key Tool isn't working then you will have to backup and reinstall your Windows. Usually when the tool doesn't work means the existing non-genuine version of Windows is too corrupt.

Take care and thank you Roy,

    Stephen

  • Hello Roy_Norway,

Contact Dell at this link and order a reinstallation cd:  http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/backupcd_form?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

  • Thanks, but I have the reinstall cd right here.
I'm just asking if there is any other way besides the Microsoft way to change the product key without having to reinstall the OS.
    Help would be much appreciated

  • Hello Roy_Norway,

I assumed that when you mentioned that you tried the "Microsoft way" to change your PK that you had already tried the PK Updater Utility.

If you have not yet tried it, please follow this link:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=45668

  • You assumed correctly.
This little program comes up with a little box saying that the product key can't be changed on this computer.
And sets up a link to a Microsoft support line that cost 80 USD just to ask the question I ask here.
And with this said, I ask again: Is there ANY OTHER way besides re-install and this other method that can help me change the product key?
