The new design is worse than the old one RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hi all,

The forum appears to load faster but......The new forum design is worse than the old one!

    Why so?

    1) There is too much white space between things
    2) There is too much in the page header - threads start halfway down the page: Regional switching, MSDN banner, MSDN header, MSDN functions, breadcrumb, forum header, forum intro, announcement, filtering...
    3) The white spacing is not consistent, making elements feel thrown out and cluttered
    4) The medallions are extremely distracting and creates associations to war heroes and veterans
    5) The photos and profiles on right-hand side makes it look like a dating and mating site!!
    6) Too many font sizes everywhere
    7) Red/brown color in the heading is more 'energetic' and stressful than blue
    8) Arbitrary round and sharp corners used inconsistently (e.g. search box has sharp corners, top buttons are round)
    9) Different shades of gray as text background?? (an eye test for senior citizens)
    10) Using blue instead of black-on-white for text on post listings (psychedelic)
    11) Icons which does not reinforce any message but take up space and cause confusion (inconsistent symbolism)
    12) Sudden change of font size in sentences  (typography)
    13) Too many color tones which are not matched: light ray, dark gray, light red, dark red, blue-gray, yellow, orange, green, all on the same page. Someone should check or equivalent and revise the whole color scheme.

I miss the previous design, really.

  • HiTech2k:

I would have to agree with everything you say. The visual appearance/design of the new forums is absolutely awful. The old ones were much more tasteful.

However there have been considerable improvements in usability. Most important, after the recent upgrade, it is now possible to reply to a post with zero page refreshes, and still view the entire thread (if your screen is tall enough). Previously, this required two page refreshes and you could only read the post you were replying to.

Unfortunately the implementation of the new floating reply window (and particularly the code formatter) is very clunky ...

  • I also agree with all the above criticisms. You sound like you have a good sense of design.

That site looks very handy :)

  • It's a lot better now though, in this latest release, IMO.
