Home Edition Purchase

Question
-
I would like to simply buy Windows Home Edition and install it on an existing computer and make that computer my hub for the other 4 computers that I have. I cannot find where I can purchase Windows Home Edition on its own. The local Best Buy does not carry it and all I get are strange looks when I ask for it. On the MS website, it simply points me to computer manufacturers that make computers with Home Edition installed. Where can I buy Home Edition on its own?Saturday, August 1, 2009 3:49 PM

"Windows Home Edition"??
If you meant "Windows Home Server", it's available from most online e-tailers (NewEgg being but one example.)
It's not available in stores, because it's not sold as a Retail product (OEM System Builder only.)
If you haven't yet done so, I'd highly recommend that you first download and install the 120-day trial that's aavailable from MS, and make sure that it does work properly with your chosen hardware.
If everything does work properly, you can then later purchase the OS, and do a Server Reinstallation to 'upgrade' to the full license.
HTH,
Chris

I assume you mean Windows Home Server? :) WHS is an OEM-only product (there is no retail "off-the-shelf" version). You can either buy a pre-built server (i.e. HP MediaSmart Server or Acer EasyStore), or you can purchase the OEM license yourself from websites such as newegg.com. (NOTE: OEM license means you are a system builder and you get no support from MS at all.) Frankly, unless you are REALLY familiar with building computers, I would suggest you get one of the pre-built devices (which includes customer service as well as a warranty).- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Saturday, August 1, 2009 5:00 PM
