Can't install Windows Identity Foundation on Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core (Unknown exit code 2149842967 when trying to install) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I am trying to install the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Reporting Extensions on my SQL 2008 R2 (where Reporting Services is located). The SQL is installed on a Windows 2008 R2 Server Core.

The Reporting Extensions has some requirements (i.e.: .NET 4 and Windows Identity Foundation). I managed to download and install the .NET 4 framework for Windows Server core. However I can't seem to install the Windows Identity Foundation for Windows Server 2008 R2.

If I try to proceed with the installation (hoping that it will download and install the appropriate package) I get the error:

INSTALLATION FAILED - UNKNOWN EXIT CODE 2149842967

If I try to install the MSU package Windows6.1-KB974405-x64.msu (downloadable from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=eb9c345f-e830-40b8-a5fe-ae7a864c4d76&displaylang=en) I get a dialog box saying that this update is not applicable for my computer (?!?!?!?!?)

Please advise as I am stuck... :(

    Thanks in advance,
    P.

  • Sounds like this is a situation where you have SQL/SRS installed on Server Core OS.  I see the following in the Planning Guide section of the IG which discusses this not being supported for the CRM server:

    ·    Windows Server 2008 installed by using the Server Core installation option is not supported for installing and running Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Server.

I suspect the same is true for installing the other CRM server components such as E-mail Router or SRS Extensions.

  • WIF doesn't talk about compatibility with CORE server installs.  I am guessing it's not since people are having problems with this.  It looks like you will need to install a full blown version in order to get this to work.

  • This isn't also the CRM server is it?  If so then it would have already been installed as part of the CRM install.

  • Hi Jamie,

No it isn't. It is my understanding that I have to install it where the Reporting Services is located. Therefore I am installing it on my SQL Server 2008 R2. According to this site:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg554694.aspx

"You must run the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Reporting Extensions Setup on a computer that has Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services installed [...]"

What I can't understand is why there are several .NET components that can be easily installed on a CORE OS, but I am having such a hard time with WIF (Windows Identity Foundation). :(

  • I looked everywhere and it seems that Windows Identity Foundation (WIF) can't be installed on a Server Core. Google, Bling, Blogs, MSDN and Technet. Nothing on WIF for Server Core.

    • Can't install WIF on a Server Core
    • SQL 2008 R2 on the other hand, can be installed on a Server Core (fully supported).
    • So if you have a SQL 2008 R2 environment on a Server Core, where your SSRS resides, you can't install the CRM Reporting Extension on your SSRS... FAIL

This is embarrassing, to say the least (lots of rude words in my head right now)... The least that Microsoft should do is document this scenario on the documentation related to CRM Reporting Extensions.

  • I am exactly in same situation.

I have Windows 2008 R2 CORE server with SQL.

Installation of Microsoft Dynamics CRM Reporting Extensions failed due to dependencies: .NET 4 and Windows Identity Foundation.

.NET 4 can be installed, but WIF - failed to install. So, how to cheat OS check?

  • Jim is correct that Server Core is not a supported OS option for CRM server, E-mail Router, or SRS Extensions. The Planning Guide mentions this for the CRM server but we are updating the documentation to also reference E-mail Router and SRS Extensions. I see it mentioned earlier in the thread that this is a supported scenario for SQL 2008 R2 but we had seen the following documentation stating this is not supported by SQL either:

Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2008 R2

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx:

“SQL Server 2008 R2 is not supported on Windows Server 2008 SP2 Server Core or Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core installations.”
