Windows 7 validation issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • My works machine has decided it's not genuine and product id and activation are now both defined as not available

I can see the product key using Piriform Speccy so I know it's still there, but the genuine advantage validator says system files have been modified, buy a new copy of windows

The diagnostics tool is also saying 'failed to output files, hr = 0x800706b5, please contact support'

I have ran sfc /scannow and a chkdsk and tried updating windows from the install disk - which says it's unable to do as it's an older version of windows - I'm on SP1 but can't find how to uninstall it

    Help!

  • Open Windows Explorer (Computer)

    Navigate to the C:\Windows folder

Find the System32 sub-folder and right-click on it

    select Properties

Clear the 'blob' from the 'Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)' box by clicking on it until it's plain white.

    Click on Apply.

Make sure that the radio button for 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files' is set, and click OK.

Accept the Administrator prompt. After a couple of seconds, you'll be told there is an error - click on the 'Ignore all' button.

Wait for it to finish - it could take a couple of minutes.

OK out, and exit Windows Explorer.

    Reboot twice

Run another MGADiag report, and post the results

  • Yay!!

    That's what I like to see :)

All clear - you should confirm everything by validating at www.microsot.com/genuine/validate , which will clear a very minor error in the report.

    Good luck!

  • There is a
problem with your Software Protection Service - something is preventing it from
starting on demand the way it should.

Please use the following in an attempt to isolate the cause.

Click on Start in the Search box, type

    SERVICES.MSC

and hit the Enter key - accept the UAC prompt if you get one.

Look in the console for the Software Protection service, right-click on it and select Properties.

make sure that the Startup Type is set to Automatic (Delayed Start), and click Apply.

Try starting the service now - do you get an error message? Does it start? does it almost
    immediately stop again?

Post back with your results, and a new MGADiag report.

If it doesn't start, then please do the following...

Please open an Elevated (Administrator) Command Prompt window and use the following commands....

    net start sppsvc

    sc qc sppsvc

    sc queryex sppsvc

    sc qprivs sppsvc

    sc qsidtype sppsvc

    sc sdshow sppsvc

Copy and paste the output to your reply

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • Won't start - says Error:5 Access is denied - it's already set to (Automatic Delayed Start)

    and the output is:

    c:\>net start sppsvc
The Software Protection service is starting.
The Software Protection service could not be started.

    A system error has occurred.

    System error 5 has occurred.

    Access is denied.

  • Please first try recreating Licensing Store.

    Recreate the Licensing Store

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt

Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

    net stop sppsvc

(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

    CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

    net start sppsvc

    slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.

You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.

If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report

  • Yay!!

    That's what I like to see :)

All clear - you should confirm everything by validating at www.microsot.com/genuine/validate , which will clear a very minor error in the report.

    Good luck!
