Migration to New Server RRS feed

  • Question

  • We did a complete new installation of our OS, CRM, etc. This new server is still off-line. The final challange is to migrate the user accounts, customization and data to the new server. What steps do I need to perform here.

Please note one possible complication. Our organization name has changed. What do I need to do to assure that the records still recognize the original owner? For instance in the past Joe signed in as OLDDOMAIN\joe but now he would sign in as NEWDOMAIN\joe. Just like the organization name in CRM the DOMAIN has changed. Any input is appreciated a lot.

  • step three moves your entire database - all customizations are included in the database.

The 'blank' CRM Database currently on your new server will be deactivated and can be deleted. - (not merged with the imported organization.)

As long as the users are in your new AD, you'll be able to map them to the users in your imported CRM database.

All customizations/securitygroups etc are in the database and will be available once the organization has been imported/restored.

  • Go ahead and apply KBs to the server.

restore the CRM database from your old server to the new server and use the CRM Deployment tool to import the organization into the new deployment. - (You may have to 'disable' the existing organization in order to import this 'restored' organizaiton.

During the import it will ask you to map users from the old implementation to the new users in the new org.

ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL: There is a reg setting that DRAMATICALLY improves the organization import process. - See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977867

  • Scott, thanks for the reply. So after some more research I guess I would do the following:

    1. Install rollup 11

    2. Apply http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977867

    3. Scenario 2 of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/952934 (You want to redeploy the Microsoft Dynamics CRM deployment that includes the Microsoft Dynamics CRM server within the same domain or to another domain.) This will move the SQL database but does nothing to CRM yet, correct?

    4. Use CRM Deployment tool to import the organization to the new computer/deployement

    Questions:

    a) Will step 3 also move all my customizations? If not I assume I should import the customization on the new deployment before step 3.

    b) I assume I will have to create all users manually which would be done before step 3.

    c) We have new roles defined and the roles have new properties that are not included in the standard deployment. Are all of these roles and special properties (to control access rights) imported with step 3, with the customizations or does it have to be done manually?

    Thanks
