Errors 998 & 0x800CCC33

    Question

  • I use Outlook Express & Microsoft Office Outlook all the time & have for years.  Just 3 days ago both stopped working and returned errors when I tried to "Receive & Send all".  I can still access my email from a number of browsers ie; "Firefox", "Opera", and even "Windows Live Mail"... but no longer with Outlook Express or Microsoft Office Outlook.  I have a home network, and my other computer is having same problem.  I run XP on one & use Vista 64 on the other.  Complete error message below for a hotmail account:

Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server.  Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Forbidden', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 998, Error Number: 0x800CCC33

Same error for a MSN account below:

Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server.  Account: 'MSN', Server: 'http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/hmdata', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Forbidden', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 998, Error Number: 0x800CCC33

What can I do to fix this ?  I did not change a thing, as it worked one day, then not the next.  Was a "value" changed somewhere I do not know of?  Thanks in advance..

  • I am glad you asked this question. I too have used outlook express along with hotmail to
send most of my photos out of "my pictures" folders and keep getting this same number error, although
mine includes something about user name and password. I have went to both hotmail and outlook to
see my accounts and the password and user name. I know they are correct and I have not changed them
anytime in the past few days when this occurred. I cannot send a message due to this error using outlook.
Frustrated with hours of trying to fix it!! Please help!!

    Error looks like this:

Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server.  Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Forbidden', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 998, Error Number: 0x800CCC33

Access to the account was denied. Verify that your username and password are correct. Account: 'Hotmail (2)', Server: 'http://mail.live.com/default.aspx?&ip=10.4.25.8&d=d1545&mf=0', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Forbidden', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC33

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! !

  • I too have used  hotmail on my outlook express for years but just recently, as couple of days ago, I am only receiving the following error message neither can receive or send emails through outlook using my hotmail accounts.

Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server.  Account: 'ard', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: 'Forbidden', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 998, Error Number: 0x800CCC33

hope this is not a new msn RESTRICTION to commercialize the free hotmail accounts.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
