The product key you typed is already in use...

Question

OK, so all of a sudden, I'm assuming after downloading the latest MS patch, I get this error popping up.
Why and what can I do to fix it?
I've tried typing in my code on the box, and revalidating through Control Panel but I keep getting the same error.

Just some feedback on how I finally fixed this.
The process that you suggested STILL told me that I had a code that was already in use.
I followed the 0800 instructions and ended up talking to one of the rudest customer service reps I think I have EVER spoken with.
Whoever she was behaved like a complete Nazi, was amazingly rude, and had all the bedside manner of a rattlesnake. After several minutes of total unpleasantness the issue was resolved.
Now, the interesting thing for you, is that I am one of the major purchasers of your software in NZ, and if I EVER gave one of my 3,000 customers the service that Microsoft just gave me, I would sack them.
Amazingly disappointed.
Feel free to contact me at my hotmail address, iapperley@hotmail.com if you want any more information. I hope I never have to go through this nightmare again.

Hi HarryFinch,
Your Diagnostic Report looks fine. It appears that to resolve your issue, you must Activate Windows using the "Activate by Phone" method. Please follow the below steps:
Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.
Thank you,
Darin Smith

I just experienced this same exact problem. Why Vista suddenly decides my key is in use weeks after it's been initially activated is beyond me.
I have to say I was also treated rudely by CS and it will be some time before I consider purchasing any more Microsoft products if by doing so you're treated suspect by CS.
Maybe you should consider finding out why this is happening instead of assuming your customers are stealing from you.

what a difference 2 weeks make. my operator didn't treat me like a criminal at all. i guess half the installed base needs to deactivate itself before they figure out there may be a real problem.
