I don't think so and I would hope not. Unlike other forums, this is a place for a large number of random MS developers all over the world, not a small self-selected community. The last thing I want is get bombarded with spam or private requests for help from total strangers whenever I post something.

I suggest you post your edit comment (why entering text into a reason box is necessary when editing) as a new thread with an appropriate subject. I doubt if many people will see it as a comment.Btw I agree with your answer. I get people who I don't know sending me e-mail because I post in MS newsgroups. Private messages would be ten times worse.

There are already two earlier threads on this subject:
http://forums.msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/suggest/thread/1ed09ecf-44c0-4edd-84c5-731e4f831697
http://forums.msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/suggest/thread/fd978339-eb2f-479c-a1dc-fa93ef939fcc
MS people were posting in both threads so they are definitely aware of the issue. I bumped one anyway, maybe more people will chime in.- Edited by Christoph Nahr Thursday, September 4, 2008 1:49 PM Trivial edit, as usual.

We've talked about a PM system and even had a prototype implemented, but it hadn't been high enough on our priority list to get any traction. I think one of the reasons people wanted PMs was that moderators wanted a way to be able to contact posters privately, and email isn't an option...

In that case I would strongly urge you to make private messaging an opt-in feature, i.e. users would have to check an option to receive private messages from anyone but moderators.

Appreciate the feedback. This is an area that we definitely need to think through and get feedback on before rolling something out. I don't know if opt-in is the way to go necessarily, but we do need to balance the benefits with the ways it can be misused. One option might be to make it so that everyone can receive and reply to private messages, but only certain people can send them (ie. moderators, user with x points, etc…).
If you have ideas or scenarios for how private messages can be a benefit and/or a detriment to forums, please reply to this thread. We’ll certainly be seriously considering what everyone has to say.
Thanks,
-Andrew

Privacy?

My e-mail addresses are MY e-mail addresses. Where's the privacy problems in using one of them to contact me?Saturday, September 6, 2008 1:08 PM

To accommodate that, there would need to be an opt-in feature here, where folks like you could say "It's OK for MS to contact me" otherwise MS could be seen as violating your privacy. You may think this daft, and many will agree with you, but that's why, for example, many MVP profiles are missing.

Moderators/users of the forums system have no access to the email address that you use to log in, I assume for privacy reasons. In fact, I don't even believe it's stored in the forums system at all (though, I didn't triple check). It's in the Live DB, and there's no access to it there...

Thanks for the explanation.
I naturally don't use my main e-mail address when logging in here (or in the newsgroups for that matter) but it is read occasionally.
It just seemed crazy that you were considering using messaging - which I would consider as extremely intrusive - and not using e-mailing which is not.Sunday, September 7, 2008 7:06 AM -
I'm not sure how private messaging (as implemented on many other forums systems... i.e. not IM) is more intrusive than email. PM is like a private emailling system...

Yes,in fact I think Private message are used for something that is of non-technical things, e.g: I'd like to tell someone that you've posted a wrong thread in someplace and do moving……, ect。Even if someone sends issues about claims, warnings or something bad, first always offer him a warning not to do that before taking futher actions of deleting his posts or disabling his account……
In fact, www.asp.net is a nice sample that has offered us this function! However private message cannot be so clear for us to see, so if you group has developed such a function, don't forget to tell the acceptor that someone's sent you a private message when logging in……
MANY THANKS!!!

I think we can have something in the middle... Say we can have forum option to request email address, and forum users can opt-in to say "dafault allow"/"default reject"/"Ask me".
After users exchanged email address, feel free to carry on the conversation privately.
On a second thought, I've seen certain forum allow forum users to send email within the forum, so users can mail another user without knowing the user's e-mail address at all. However in this way it'd be the responsibility of forum to provide whitelist/blacklist machnism, since the mail server would not have way to block unwanted mail sent this way (other than blocking everything be sent here, which defect the purpose of having such system here)
