Verifying that a XP Product key has not been used RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Full Retail version of WinXP Pro that was given to me by someone who doesn't need it.  It's got the genuine hologram CD and a product code sticker on the package.

Is it possible to determine if this product code has been used before?

e.g.  Is there a Microsoft web page where I can type in the 25 digit code and be given it's status?

    thanks.

  • The only way to make a determination is to install and attempt to activate Windows XP.

  • That's exactly what I *don't* want to do.  I may decide to sell this copy so it would be very useful to know if it's been activated or not.

  • Robert,

You would have to validate/activate the product. Curious was the product opened prior you receiving it? Please review the following website:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/. This website can assist with answering your question.  Take care and have a great day.
