Invalid Product Key

Question
-
I have been forced to reinstall Windows XP on my eMachines T2682. I used the XP disk that came with the machine and the key on the Certificate of Authority on the back of the machine. It was purchased at Best Buy and the hardware is unchanged. After entering the Product Key in the imstallation process, it throws an error "The Product Id you entered is not valid". Now, I know for a fact that this is not a pirated copy since it came with the machine and I purchased it at a major chain. I can't go back in the install, nor forward. I can't get into safe mode or anything, just stuck right here. How can this be resolved?Sunday, May 18, 2008 4:05 AM

I have exactly the same problem, with a Toshiba laptop bought from a highly reputable dealer, but repaired recently by a backstreet dealer (I'm a long way from home).
The windows validation tool reports an invalid product (WGA Data--> Validation Status: Invalid Product Key Validation Code: 8) but when I try re-register with my original genuine key it says it is incorrect. I can't believe Tosiba distributes pirate software so why is my key not recognised? And I can't afford $1.50/minute (from here) to listen to Microsoft's music-on-hold in the hope that a 'customer service representative' will eventually come to my aid.
Any ideas?

Hi Lori ms,
your info is pretty good, but it does not answer the question. The installation stops at entering the key code. It says it is invalid. You can't go forward from there. But I called microsoft and was told it is a valid code. So how is this being corrected? I might as well throw the computer away if the OS won't install. And I bought it only six months ago.
Windows XP Professional won't install past product key entry.

Rleec,
The error message you are seeing is displayed when the Product Key being entered does not match the exact type of product being installed.
For example, if the Product Key is for an upgrade retail license for XP Pro and you are using the CD for a full retail license for XP Pro, you will see that error.

I have an eMachine & the exact same problems with the (Product key code error. I also can not make changes to, or print, my own documents I've created on Excel (Also purchased at Best Buy. & came with the eMachines hardware).
Have you learned anything new since your 5-18-09 message? If still a problem on 10-6-09 I'll try the reinstallation of Windows XP. ThanksTuesday, October 6, 2009 2:23 AM -
Hello thesnopes,
You wrote, "I also can not make changes to, or print, my own documents I've created on Excel"
You may be encountering what happens when the TRIAL installation of Office 2007 that is preinstalled on many new computers has expired. In order to resume full featured use of the installed TRIAL of Office 2007, you have to purchase a perpetual licence and then convert the TRIAL to the fully licensed product.
Please see this Office Help article for more info: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/HA101936151033.aspx

Hi! I have this problem too. Has anyone discovered a solution? The links posted don't help and don't answer the question.Saturday, January 16, 2010 6:11 PM -
Hello Chris Oscar,
Please create your own post and provide a full description of the Windows Genuine Advantage problem you are experiencing.
Please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.
Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.
1. After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.
2. Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.
Next look on the computer itself, in the documentation you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). If you have one, tell us about the COA. Tell us:
1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. DO NOT post the Product Key that may be printed on the CoA.
Not sure what to look for? See this page for reference: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.
