Windows 7 HP no longer genuine after 2 years RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good evening,

My windows 7 HP is telling me it is not genuine after 2 years of use and can no longer download the updates. It was installed on the laptop when I bought it from PC world. I have not made any changes to it apart from adding a genuine Microsoft office a few months back so I am just utterly irritated, I would love your help, thank you ever so much.

    Katrina

  • You have a couple of errors - which probably need to be fixed in vastly different ways.

we'll start with the easy one...

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\windows\system32\wat\watadminsvc.exe[7.1.7600.16395], Hr = 0x80092003

    Close all open windows.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and type the following command

    wusa /uninstall /kb:971033

    and hit the Enter key

Accept the warnings/confirmations, and wait for it to complete

copy and paste the output (if any) from the command prompt window to a reply here,

    Reboot

    reinstall the update from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033

    Reboot

run another MGADiag report, and post it.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • The Uninstall did what it was supposed to, at least - but you haven't re-installed the update yet.

Please do so - either from Windows Update, or from the link I posted earlier.

Once installed, attempt validation using Internet Explorer at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate and then post another MGADiag report.

  • Oh apologies, I had attempted to re-install and this is why I thought I had completed all of your steps. However, on the second go around I read the screen properly...the windows update told me that the update had failed, I have tried a couple more times with the same result.

  • Interesting.

    What error code shows?

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

     CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at the next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size  of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally  (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Upload the CBS.log file (compressed, please!) to your OneDrive or DropBox Public folder, and post a link - also post a new MGADiag report.

  • The error code you posted is VERY rare. - but it does seem to have a Fixit that works when it appears.

Download and save the Fixit from the page (NOT the overlay!) here - http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/971058

First run it in normal mode - and reboot then try installing KB971033 again.

If it still fails, run the Fixit again, this time in Aggressive mode. Once complete reboot again and try the KB971033 install again then reboot and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

If that fails then we'll try a manual reset of WU.

The problem appears to be at one of the many points where WGA and WU meet - so it's likely that you will be unable to install updates until this is fixed properly.

  • Good morning, sorry I was busy as hell yesterday. Sadly it did not work, I also feel a bit embarrassed to say but not for love nor money could I find the aggressive mode. I just ran the same thing twice, the first time it reported that one of my issues couldn't be solved but the second time it gave me the green ticks, I thought this meant victory but the update still failed.

  • OK - at least something happened ;)

Please upload the C:\Windows\Windowsupdate.log and the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log files to OneDrive and post links (you'll have to copy the CBS.log file to the desktop before uploading the copy) - I'll see if there's any clues in there as to what's happening.

  • Righto, this SHOULD be a link to my update log...https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=E02432212717C5D1!243&authkey=!AH-ZEwJQiTdkIfA&ithint=file%2clog

And this, fingers crossed, is the CBS log....https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=E02432212717C5D1!245&authkey=!AFAUXdeyr3_6340&ithint=file%2ctxt

  • They worked ;)

Hmmm - the windowsupdate log seems to be reporting the update as successful?

The CBS.log is a little odd - there's nothing in it more recent than 7th October?

There are a mass of 'non-error' failures showing, but I'm none too sure how important they are. There are no errors as such in it.

Perhaps there's a tool which may help...

Download WATFix - make sure that you UNTICK the box for the 'download manager', and click on the link on the left of the page, not the big shiny button on the right (which is an ad for the download manager!!) - and use that - extract the .exe file, and run it, then reboot.

Post back with another MGADiag report, and we'll then see what's changed, if anything - then try installing KB971033 again.

  • Good morning, I have no clue why its reporting that download was successful, I do keep getting an updating one out of one message most evenings when I am shutting down but nothing actually happens according to the windows updater, that still tells me I have 3 important and 4 optional waiting, I always get the same rare error code. Also, (again I am sorry!) the CBS.log is from the 7th when you asked me to run all those checks as I just presumed I didn't need to run them again, I am a computer pleb, should I go and re-do the stages from before and post you a new CBS.log?

I have run WATfix, hopefully you see something different in the follow mass of text....

  • I can't see anything different there - please try installing the KB971033 update again and see if it goes in properly this time. If so, then post a new MGADiag report.

If not, then I think we'll have to move on to a Repair Install of Windows.

  • Good morning...again! I feel like I am taking up a lot of your time, I really do appreciate it. I can not report good news as there is still no joy. Still unable to install downloads and receiving the same error code.

  • In that case, I think we'd better go for a more general fix - I think we've covered as much ground as we can in a forum context.

Please attempt a Repair install of Windows - see here for the instructions.
