  I understand you are not writing about a problem with Windows Research Kernel but rather about a problem with retail version of WinXP. My advice - reinstall the operating system and make sure it's not a pirated copy. If you use a pirated copy, all bets are off - you may get all sorts of interesting effects.

  Anyway, I think there's something broken in your OS installation: try to repair the installation or perform a new Windows installation.
  You could use Dependency Walker to inspect your kernel32.dll file and verify if the GetProcessId function is present into: you can download the program (it doesn't need installation) from the following web addresses

  http://download.microsoft.com/download/visualfoxpro7/utility/2.1/w9x2kmexp/en-us/dependsia64version2.1.3623.exe (64 bit version)
  http://download.microsoft.com/download/visualfoxpro7/utility/2.1.3623/w9x2kmexp/en-us/dependsx86version2.1.3623.exe (32 bit version)
