Can't choose primary disk at installation time? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have two disks, one is 250GB and onw is 2TB. Both are seen at the installatio ntime. However, the 2TB one is listed as primary disk and 250GB one is listed as secondary disk. The OS can only be installed onto primary disk. It seems to me that I can't choose the 250GB disk as the primary disk.

I had to disconnect the 2TB disk and install Vail onto 250 GB disk and then add 2TB into the storage pool after the installation.

    What did I do wrong?

  • In most cases, the "first" disk of sufficient size will be used as the system disk. The "first" disk is determined by the BIOS, and different BIOS revisions and providers have different ways of making this choice, so you may have to fiddle around a bit.

The usual answer is to make certain that your desired boot disk is attached to the lowest numbered SATA port on the primary SATA controller on the motherboard if you will have only SATA drives, or as master on the lowest numbered IDE port if you will have a mix of IDE and SATA drives. If you have multiple SATA controllers (for example both Intel ICH# and JMicron controllers) make sure you connect to the primary controller. :)

In your case, I would make sure your system drive is the first disk on the primary controller, then I would wipe both disks (using e.g. diskpart in another computer) and try again. In V1 it was relatively important that your disks be properly connected in the event of a server reinstallation; some scenarios could result in reinstallation/recovery not being offered as an option.

Finally, as far as I know, Vail will not offer the option of choosing a system disk at installation time, as part of the GUI.

  • One of the two disk (250GB one) is connected to the sata port on the mobo and the other is in an external enclosure which is connected to SIl3132 via ESATA cable. This configuration simulates what I am using for WHS v1 which has two external enclosure.

In WHS v1, you can choose which disk you would like to install the system.

    No you can't.

In V2, you can't. It is not convinient. For example, if you are in server recovery mode and all disks are recognized. However if you can't choose which drive to install, what if WHS choose a disk in storage pool for the system installation?
In v1, it wouldn't (it would know to install on a non-secondary drive, whether it has the OS on it or not).  I'd be willing to bet that Vail will be the same when it's released.  Now perhaps it won't in this beta version (because it's incomplete), but I haven't tried it yet so I don't know.

I am not sure whether this is a oversight or intentionly. It is interesting that for all other OS installation, including desktop OS and server OS, you can choose which disk for the system disk.

I tried the installation again this morning. Interestly 250GB one is recognized as primary disk. However I still can't choose which drive to load system.

Can anyone try the installation process and see what happens? You don't need to install the system really. Just boot the installation DVD and see which disk is recognized as primary.

  • Did you select in BIOS the 2TB disk as the first one in boot order?

  • It may just look for a drive attached to SATA 0 and use that. Perhaps if you changed the order of the SATA cables it would have worked.

  • No you can't.
I just tried using the same two disks for installing V1 and I am able to choose which disk I would like to install the system. If you want the evidance I can attach the screen capture.
