vail public preview Installation Error

Question
-
Ive been trying endlessly to install the new Windows Home Server Vail Public Preview i keep making it to expanding files in setup and then i run into a installation error page which lets you view the installation log the last lines say
Error Win7 Setup exited with 0
Exited (0x800040005)
failed to launch windows setup
I at first thought it may be due to the fact that the release notes say do not install on western digital advanced format drives, so i tryed several drives
WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache
WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache
and a 200gjg hitachi drive all still come up with the same error code please help! :(

Try downloading again?

i assume you have burnt the image to a dvd - possibly worth burning another and make sure you verify the dvd if you did not do this the first time
also have you checked the crc/sha1 check sums from your download - if you used the microsoft file transfer manager to do the download it checks the file to ensure the check sums match before it completes etc
finally another thought - have you loaded any special drivers for your sata controller? if so are they 64bit drivers and for at least win7 64bit if you cannot get 2008 r2 64bit drivers? as these could be your problem - setting your sata controller to "ide" and not raid or any other option might also work
good luck :)

i downloaded through file transfer manager from work, copyed to usb thumb drive and copyed to my rig at home then burnt the disc. Ill try running micrsoft crc tool they mentioned on their site to see if after those several copys that the iso is still good. If that doesnt work im gonna try in a moment burning another dvd as far as raid, i have it all turned off i have not loaded any drivers for the sata controller just using whats preloaded onto the install disc.
*** update***crc of the iso and of the dvd both are as should be :/
any other ideas anyone??

How far does it get before you get the error message (what's the last screen you see before the error)?*** update***crc of the iso and of the dvd both are as should be :/

Agreed, it certainly sounds like a corrupted install disk. If all else fails, try downloading it again.SeanThis post is "AS IS" and confers no rights."kariya21" wrote in message news:af084ab7-9300-4f19-b3c4-100af53eddff...

I have the some problem !
HW : mobo ASUS P5B-Plus; Intel Core duo model ?; RAM 2 MB, 3 SATA HD's, 1 To, 2 x 100 GB
When trying to install Vail, the first part work right. All 3 HD's are detected and the primary HD is the 1To one.
After the first restart the installation continue with "Completing installation ..." and i receive a BSOD screen with "The drive extender component has experienced a severe internal error.".
To check the system, i make a Win 7 x64 installation without a problem. I am now making a new download/DVD burning ...

same here, but I'm trying to install it as a 2008R2 guest. Shame it took me 4 hours to slice out a 500gb disk for it and I can't get past the first 3 minutes of the install.Thursday, April 29, 2010 11:23 PM

Did either of you:
Verify the download? Burn again? Download again?

i verified the downloaded iso, and verified the crc of the burnt disc, the crc value is as it should be. the farthest i get in the install is right beyond the point where you select the system drive and it moves on to copying windows files, and expanding windows files etc.. once it hits expanding windows files is where the install errors out about 15 secs in before it ever even hits 1%
I have gotten the install disc to work, so im ruling out anything wrong that that. i ended up sticking the system drive for the server into my i7 main rig and installing it in that machine and once installed updated and patched, moving the system drive back into the server and fixing the MBR... fairly ghetto rigged setup. depressing it is gonna force my hand to buying a i3 setup

I was having this problem as well - got to the part where it would say "expanding", then it would hang and eventually error out; I re-burned the dvd and the second one worked.Friday, April 30, 2010 4:20 PM

have you also verified the RAM is good?SeanThis post is "AS IS" and confers no rights."taser8" wrote in message news:d43e1033-da8e-46ea-abde-df87bf8ee4a5...I was having this problem as well - got to the part where it would say "expanding", then it would hang and eventually error out; I re-burned the dvd and the second one worked.

After the first restart the installation continue with "Completing installation ..." and i receive a BSOD screen with "The drive extender component has experienced a severe internal error.".
Flash forward a little over two months...
I am trying this for the first time, and have exactly this same problem when I try to install on my full set of hardware:
Gigabyte GA-H57M-USB3 motherboard
Intel i5-650 CPU
4GB RAM
1 WD 1TB RE3 (RAID class) SATA HD (used as Primary drive)
4 WD 750GB SATA HD
Floppy drive
DVD-RW SATA drive
Three tries at a fresh install (including a fresh download) and I got identical "drive extender" BSODs all three times.
On a hunch, I unplugged my 2nd through 5th (all four 750 GB each) drives, and that got me through the full install without error. Tonight I will try connecting the additional 750GB drives back in to see if the BSOD returns.

Update: adding the drives AFTER installation works fine. This BSOD error appears to be a problem with initial installation/setup only.Thursday, August 12, 2010 12:43 AM

Please make a note to try a server recovery with drives connected once a new version is available for testing. :) (No, I can't give you a date for when that will be...)
