still a "victim of counterfeit software" (actually a victim of WGA Vista) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Michael Leahy here.

My MGA Diagnostic Tool says "Invalid License" and the Product Key matches my case.

The OEM support folks say wipe out Windows Vista and start again.  No, thanks.  I have other copy protected software like Borland's Delphi 2007 that will be lost if I wipe out Windows.

When I get the "You may be a victim" windows I click on "Go online and resolve now" but that web page says thanks and everything is fine.  But the nag windows appear again moments later.

I installed an extra gig of RAM.  It failed and I removed it.  I think that's when this mess started.

Phil Liu directed me to activate by phone.  I did that successfully.  It did not stop the problem.

Here are the results of the WGA utility after successfully activating again by phone:

Apologies for the delay, but I think your problem may be out of the scope of the forum. I would request that you submit a free WGA specific technical service request here (http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/servicerequest.aspx) to get more in-depth support.

Scroll to the bottom and follow the instructions and you should be on the way!

  • Did that.  The site said...

Thank you for validating your copy of Microsoft Windows.

Thank you for using the Windows Genuine Advantage program. You may now access resources for genuine Windows users.

So I logged off my accont. As soon as I logged back in to Windows I got "Windows Aero is not working."  "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting."

    Hey Phil,

    Would you believe...

...that I traded a number of emails with an MS support person with no luck on solving the problem, until she finally could no longer receive my emails?  I get bouncebacks from MSN and Hotmail addresses saying my IP is banned because it generates spam!  (My ISP says the're working on it.) The MS support person sent me a couple of very polite emails saying that I should reply soon or the case would be closed, and then later emailed me saying it was closed.

I'm ready to wipe out Vista on that machine and start over.  What better way to spend a weekend. Smile
