Question

I've just discovered this message in the System Window. The repairman who sold me this computer told me he replaced the processor, but that it's otherwise new. I can't find a sticker on this Dell Inspirion 531. There's a key on the System Window, but I'm told it's invalid when I select "activate Windows Now". Here's the diagnostics report.
EDIT: I installed service pack 2 overnight, and now I have 15 days. New report below.

Hello androidlove,
If this Dell computer does not have a Certificate of Authenticity for Windows affixed to it, then it is not licensed to run a Dell OEM-SLP installation of Windows, which is what is installed now.
You can doublecheck by entering the computer's Dell Service Tag into their support site to go to the computer specific page, then click on the Warranty status link on the left, then click on the as-shipped configuration tab on the warranty page. You may see an entry for the reinstallation discs for some OS, perhaps Windows or perhaps a Unix/Linux flavor such as OpenBSD. Or you may not. If you see that it shipped with BSD or some other non-Windows OS, then that's definitive proof that it was never licensed to run Windows, and that you would need to purchase a license for Windows to continue to run Windows on this Dell computer.

I just ran a key finder suggested by About.com. EDIT: the key is the same as above (what I can see), but it doesn't activate Vista. I guess this is obvious.
The new processor is an AMD Athlon 64 processor 3800+ 2400 Mhz. This appears to be a 32 bit Vista (I'm learning as I go).
I see that I only have service pack 1, but I thought I updated to service pack 2. I'll fix that.

Have a look in the battery compartment - Dell have taken to putting the Stickers there, in laptops. If you find it, go to System Properties and use the option to Change Product Key at the bottom of the page.HTH

My Dell doesn't have a tag. I did run into some residue on the case where a sticker might have been. I'd like to fix this problem by buying a new key online, but I don't see where to do that.Friday, June 18, 2010 1:07 AM

Hello androidlove,
When you try to activate and are told the product key is invalid, you should be directed to a web page with options for getting genuine. Look for links like "Learn More Online" or "Resolve Now."
If you go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on Validate Windows, you will be told that your Windows is valid, because your installation is still within the 30 day grace period. Once that's up, and you click Validate Windows, you should be directed to similar pages for getting genuine.

My Contol Panel System page takes me here http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/vista/LicensingInfo.aspx when I ask to buy a new key. When I click on the picture or link by "Buy a single license of Windows Vista" Im taken to the validation page which then takes me to the validated page http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/SuccessfulActivation.aspx?displaylang=en&cCode=USA&Error=0&sGuid=983855bc-59d1-42d2-874e-7baae6c009b4 . I try "Find genuine Microsoft software and much more online at the Microsoft Store" and I am taken to the store front. I type "Vista" in the search box, and the page fills with Windows 7 products. Other paths lead me to this "If your Windows product key is not valid, if you don't have a Windows product key, or if you lost the product key that came with your copy of Windows, you'll need to buy a new one to activate Windows. For more information, go to the Microsoft website." When i click on the link "Microsoft website", I am taken to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/products/get where it says "How to purchase Windows Vista. Visit your local or online retailer to buy a PC with Windows Vista." The page suggests I get windows 7 instead. I was hoping to avoid an OS instal and just go with what I wound up with. It was a pain to turn off all those special features Vista came with. I hear 7 has even more to turn off.

Without either a COA Sticker, or a Service Tag number, then you have no way to trace the licensed OS for that computer.Without at least the Service Tag number, it's impossible to go back to Dell and ask if they know he COA license Key number, and impossible for Dell to ensure that you get the correct Recovery disks for your system (but it may be worth a shot - they may be able to track the Tag from an installed part's serial number - and that way see if you have a valid Key and for what OS). Some Dell OEM Keys may also have been blocked by MS for being over-used - if yours (the one the computer *should* have) is one, then even the correct Recovery disk would not help, as you'd need to have the COA Key to activate.HTHSorry we can't help more.--
