This can result from mistakenly setting the System32 folder and its contents to 'Read Only' status.

    Open Windows Explorer (Computer)

    Navigate to the C:\Windows folder

Find the System32 sub-folder and right-click on it

    select Properties

Clear the 'blob' from the 'Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)' box by clicking on it until it's plain white.

    Click on Apply.

Make sure that the radio button for 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files' is set, and click OK.

Accept the Administrator prompt. After a couple of seconds, you'll be told there is an error - click on the 'Ignore all' button.

Wait for it to finish - it could take a couple of minutes.

OK out, and exit Windows Explorer.

    Reboot twice

    Post a new MGADiag report.

  • Open an Elevated
Command Prompt, and run the following commands

     sc sdshow plugplay
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-18" /S
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-19" /S
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-20" /S

    .

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Copy and paste the results to your reply

  • My proof-reading was bad - there's typos in all the errored commands :(

    Try this set instead....

     sc sdshow plugplay

Sorry about that - comes from copy/pasting and not rechecking that the forum software hasn't screwed with it!

  • Ouch! - the two main service profiles are 'missing'!

    The question is - Why?

Let's do a little more searching before we attempt to fix it....

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

    DIR C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NTUSER.DAT /S /AH
    DIR C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NTUSER.DAT /S
    REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList" /S

    Post the results.

  • Ah - that explains it, then.

The ProfileList key is missing the two entries for the services.

    I've uploaded a file - profilelist.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive

    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
This will create the file profilelist.reg in the folder profilelist in the same place as the zipfile.

Find the profilelist.reg file and right-click on it - select Merge

Accept the warnings, and you should get a 'success' message.

    Reboot.

Now run a new MGADiag report.

  • Hmmm - still no joy :(

Let's check that what should have happened, did in fact happen.....

Run the following commands and post the results.

    REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList" /S
    REG QUERY HKEY_USERS

  • OK - that's normal now...

Let's try validation and see if that kick-starts it....

Attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate using Internet Explorer - what happens?

If it fails, check the diagnostic page at www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag - what does that tell you to do?

reboot again, and post another MGADiag report.

  • when trying to validate, using internet explorer, it says that it is not applicable for this computer, and the diagnostics page says that every thing is alright.

  • There's something odd going on - perhaps installing the WAT update will help us with the diagnosis....

    install the update from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033

    Reboot

run another MGADiag report, and post it.

  • You usually only get that message if you are attempting to install the 32-bit version on a 64-bit machine (or vice-versa) - are you usre that you downloaded the 64-bit version?

  • That sounds like it could be malware :(

Boot to Safe Mode with Networking - download and install  Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from  http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM PRO' at the end of the installation -  and update it, then run a full scan  in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

    Delete everything it finds.

If the problem still exists in Safe Mode, then we'll have to try CHKDSK and SFC -

Your best option in that case is to run the CHKDSK and SFC in offline mode from a Repair Environment boot.

Reboot the computer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - one option should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.

    Log into your normal account.

You'll get a set of options - pick the Command Prompt one.

At the command prompt, type  DIR C:\

    - if we're lucky this will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including the Program Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.

If not, try D:\ or E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)

    then type the following command

    CHKDSK <drive>: /R

and wait for it to complete - it could take a few hours, depending on the size of the drive.

    Once complete, type

    sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the letter you found above.

    (example - sfc   /scannow    /OFFBOOTDIR=P:\    /OFFWINDIR=P:\Windows)

Wait for the command to complete. (make a note of the response!).

Once it has, type  EXIT and the pick the option to reboot.

    Post another MGADiag report

  • This error message is also displayed during startup with different headers, i also ran anti malware malwarebytes to remove any malware. Also when i tried to install the windows anti malware update(downloaded on another laptop and installed from a usb) i got the same message again that the update is not applicable for this computer.

  • You obviously have some fairly major problems.

run the CHKDSK and SFC scans as above  - see if they help at all.

  • ran the CHKDSK and SFC scans as mentioned above, however on rebooting i got the same errors, the chkdsk did not give any errors and the sfc also did not give any errors. MGADiag still does not run. Should i try to re install the windows from the recovery partition?

  • It does sound as if that's going to be the quickest/easiest solution - however, remember that doing so will delete all data on at least the C:\ drive, so back up first!!

A Repair install may be possible - see http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html  for instructions

  • are you quite sure your version of windows isnt a pirated copy? these messages rewally only do show up copies of windows that are pirated...my version i scored from microsoft was legit as, then had to return my copy as someone else used a keygen and my product key was used before i even took my copy out the box...oh dont rely on microsoft for any sort of help as all you'll end doing is paying them $25 for consult and $15 to talk to a tech then $45 one off cost before they even talk to you...in your case you would end up googling for a file called removewat.bat, run that as administrator, should help you out alot

  • There is no question from the report about the genuine-ness of the system - and there is no sign that RemoveWAT is in use
