Activation RRS feed

  • Question

  • I hate that you make paying customers prove that they have legal copies of their purchsed products. I have a Norton Ghost backup of my instalation so if I have problems I can restore my system quickly but everytime I do I get another notice for product activation. This time it won't activate at all notifying me I need to purchase a genuine copy of the product. I HAVE A GENUINE COPY OF THE PRODUCT! What good is that sticker I have on the back of my computer. I own a legal store bought copy of XP pro and these anoyances waste my valuable time. I have searched for the activation phone number on the internet and your site and could not find it. What do I do now? Maybe I should switch to Linux as I hear Xandros desktop pro is a great replacement and is void of spyware, malware and viruses. 3 Day to activate my product how about in 3 days I stop using microsoft products!

  • Razordrive,

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of  Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
