Original source off-line - then no sync? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Just for the record:
    Three pc's: A, B and C.

Folder with content moved on pc A.
    pc B sync'd (P2P) as expected.

    Now:
    pc C wasn't ready sync'ing when pc A went off-line.

    Question:
Shouldn't pc B be used by pc C as an alternative to get the rest of the files?

  • So, to simplify -

If PC A completed synchronizing all files to PC B
and PC A went off line before PC C completed synchronization of all files, PC C would continue to receive the rest of the synchronized files/changes from PC B.

If that isn't what you saw happen, it may have been a delay in the sync switch or you've encountered a bug.

  • If the folder was synchronized to PC B completely, then yes, I would expect that it should be used as the source for sync to PC C. However, if the changes were queued on PC A to PC C as part of the peer to peer only sync, then I suspect it will *not* switch to a new source for the files.

If, however, the folder was also synchronized to the Live Desktop, then the sync source would probably switch as needed from P2P to Cloud and back to P2P in a perfect world. :-)

  • Hi,

To add to Steve's reply: Live Mesh is smart enough to use multiple sources for syncing files, so in general if you have multiple devices in your mesh and one goes offline, sync will continue from the others.  As Steve mentions, however, this will only be able to work if the full file is present on another (i.e., other than the original source) device in your mesh.  So, if the file is complete on PC B it can be used by PC C to sync, even when PC A is offline.  Also, if PC A comes back online, Live Mesh can begin grabbing from it as well.  We have tried to design sync to be as flexible as possible, and explicitly intended it to work in situations where different devices are online and offline at different times.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    Ben.
