What version of SyncToy to use? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have two desktops. One runs Win XP Home (x86, 32 bit), another Win 7 Home Premium (x64). Which version of SyncToy should I install? May I install just one v.2.1 x64 on both machine? Or should I unstall v.2.1 x64 on Win 7 and v.2.1 x86 on XP machine?

  • Hi ilyazeld,

Yes, it is true that “both machine will communicate even if two different versions (x86 and x64) are installed”.

One SyncToy instance will not influence any SyncToy instance which is installed on another machine. If you want to sync folders between your 2 machines, just feel free to create the folder pair you want (please do not forget to let SyncToy have enough permission to access both folders). You can sync a local folder with a remote folder whose host machine has no SyncToy installed. A sync folder can be a site of more than one folder pairs, and these folder pairs will not break each other (e.g. when you want to sync files among 3 folders).

    Thanks

  • Hi ilyazeld,

Thank you for choosing SyncToy! And welcome.

SyncToy for x64 can be installed and work only on x64 Systems (The “Win 7 Home Premium x64” one in your case). The x86 version of SyncToy, on the other hand, can be installed and work on both x64 and x86 Systems (Both of your 2 machines).

(Although an x64 system can have either x86 SyncToy or x64 version, I think it should be better to install x64 SyncToy on an x64 system.)

    Thanks

  • Thank you, JiGuang, for your suggestions. From your respons, I presume, that both machine will communicate even if two different versions (x86 and x64) are installed. I'll try it...
    Thanks again.

  • Thanks for your detailed explanation. I'm going to install x64 on my Win 7 machine and will not (at least for now) instal SyncToy on my XP machine. Will see how it works.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Aha! So x64 and x32 Synctoys should communicate (flawlessly?). Someone should tack that onto the FAQ.
