  • Question

  •  My Office XP Professional with Frontpage Support is reporting not genuine because the key is reserved for a corporation or large client. Herein lies the problem. I got my copy from my MSDN Kit and I have the Product ID and Activation Key.

It validates just fine on all of my other computers but not on vista. When I bought this computer it had a pre-installed Office 12 Installation and I think the validation is failing because I don't have the office 12 Product ID and Activation Key.

Is there any way to turn this off as I AM the owner?

Right now your Office XP Pro w/Front Page installation is showing as a Volume Licensing edition which was installed with a nongenuine and now blocked Volume Licensing Key.

Please uninstall this nongenuine installation of Office XP Pro w/Front Page.  Once that's done, restart twice, and install your MSDN copy of Office XP Pro.  Then visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button to ensure that your MSDN copy validates properly.

Your installation of Office 2007 is being reported as Genuine.

  • Hello Dexter Nelson,

Your wrote, "The error I'm getting about why it didn't pass validation is that it's reserved for a corporation, which is MCJ Solutions (IT training school). It could be that one of the students got a hold of it and it leaked there, very possible."

The corporation that this key was reserved for is the Microsoft Corporation.  When you see "114 VLK 2" as the Office status that means it is one specific key, one of their internal-use keys, that would not be issued to any other company.

  • It's doing the same thing. The Office12 is genuine, but I never received a product key for it. It came activated but since it didn't have a product key I can't use it.

Edit: Just tried it again. No go. Now my MSDN copy isn't passing as genuine at all. It was perfectly fine on all my machines but for vista now it won't work on any of them. Seriously, can you unblock the key? I'll give you the proper information. You can look up my name, mcp id, product key (Company name is MCJ Solutions)... It is my software.

  • Sure. But I don't have anything else to install. All I have is the MSDN Office Pro CD. It and Windows XP Professional are the only two things I kept. This is the 4th time I've repeated the steps and about the 3rd time it validated properly on my XP box but still won't on my vista laptop. I'd be more than happy to buy an office 2007 office product key but the version I need is more than 400 bucks, which is crazy because this one that I have now is legit.

The installation of Office XP on the computer is a volume licensing installation.  I am not familair with how MSDN distributed licenses for Microsoft applications from the Office XP time frame, whether they were issued as Volume Licenses or retail licenses.  So the fact that this installation is a volume licensing installation is not conclusive of anything at this point.

However, the product key used to install the current installation is quite conclusive.  The Office status of "114 blocked vlk 2" is assigned to volume licensing installations of Office, both Office XP and Office 2003, that were done with Product Keys that Microsoft assigned to itself for internal use only.  These two product keys (one for Office XP and one for Office 2003) are the two most widely leaked and pirated product keys on the internet.  So what is conclusive is that the product key used to do the current installation of Office XP on your computer was not issued as part of your subscription to MSDN.

Do you have any records from your MSDN subscription so that you can try to discover the Product Key that you were given for Office XP back then?

I am not a Microsoft employee so I cannot assist you by looking up your previous subscription to MSDN.  Darin Smith, who is the MS employee who moderates the GA forum, may or may not have access to that info.

Regarding the installation of Office 2007 that's on your computer now, you wrote, "The Office12 is genuine, but I never received a product key for it. It came activated but since it didn't have a product key I can't use it."  Was the computer brand new when you purchased it?  And if so, did you get any sales materials about the installation of Office 2007 on the computer?  I think the installation is what is called an "Office Ready" computer, where the installation of office 2007 on the computer can be activated into one of three different editions of Office depending upon which MediaLess Licensing Kit Product Key you purchase for it.

  • The error I'm getting about why it didn't pass validation is that it's reserved for a corporation, which is MCJ Solutions (IT training school). It could be that one of the students got a hold of it and it leaked there, very possible.

As for getting the information about the MSDN I filled out the required forms and I'm waiting for word back. Not sure how long that's going to take but I was assured that it wouldn't take too long.

Yes the computer was brand new and I'm in the process of duking it out with the vendor and the manufacturer. Vendor says they don't provide product keys along with the units and I need to contact the manufacturer. The manufacturer says that each unit that is sent out to the vendor (especially custom orders like mine) come with all product, license, and activation keys, and it's back and forth.

Really frustrating and I'm getting nowhere.

  • could it be how they issued product keys with the MSDN kit a few years ago? I don't have to enter a product key. It bypasses that step and just installs.

Edit: nevermind. I just purchased a new key.
