I pass office validation... but fail box and CD tests? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I have a copy of office ultimate 2007 that appears to fail the tests used to determine if it is fake or not.  For example the CD is missing some holographic icons on the underside, and the outside box label is suspicious as well (the tear isn't threaded like it should be).  After activating successfully i ran the office validation and passed.  Since I passed I am unable to obtain the information necessary to send in my CDs for a real copy of Office through the genuine office complimentary offer. Any way to find out if I can send in my CDs even if I passed the validation test?

  • Hello Hamsters5,

From the information available in the report, it looks like your installation of Office Ultimate 2007 is Genuine.  The PK checks out as Genuine by the report, the GUID used by Office installations says you don't have a Volume Licensing installation, so it cannot be tooooo bad.

Remember, the checks done by the mgadiag utility and the validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine are mostly vetting of the product key against lists of known good PKs.  No utility in the world can look at the set of physical materials you purchased and make the comparisons that you made with you own two eyes.

I think it breaks down to two choices:

    1.  Live with what you have.

    2.  Intentionally "make" your installation nongenuine, which is the only way you can send the materials into MS for evaluation.

Choice 2 would involve trolling the internet for a nongenuine Product Key for Office Ultimate, then changing the installed Office PK to that nongenuine PK, then running validation to get it ID'd as nongenuine which would then open up the path to submitting a request for the Complimentary Replacement.

The bad news about that is Microsoft clearly states they will not return your submissions.  So, what if it turns out that you have genuine materials and send them in?  You run the risk of them turning down your request for Complimnetary Replacements and them not giving you back the (as it happens, genuine) materials you submitted as counterfeits

FWIW, in the UK, MS say that they will return Genuine products - and only hold on to fakes... it may be different elsewhere.
..... I've just checked the link I had for the Product Identification Service in the UK, only to be redirected to Bing (where the link also appears, and redirects me to bing......)
Looks like they may have shut up shop?... or having a redesign, more likely - it seems that a lot of the Licensing links are broken this morning :)
