Moving system backup drive to bigger drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there a procedure for moving  WHS backup drive to larger drive. I would like to preserve the historical view of data.

    Thank you

  • No, there's not. I doubt that a simple copy from drive to drive would work; the way Windows Home Server backup preserves file history is by using symbolic links from backup to backup. That way, if a file hasn't changed since the last backup, you only have a link to the file, rather than another copy of the (unchanged) file.

You should just buy a new drive and keep the old one (for the time being) to preserve history.

  • This seems like a very useful feature. Any chance it will be in Vail?

  • You could try Vail out and see, but no. Server backup in Vail is based on the Windows Server Backup feature from Windows Server 2008 R2, so it's completely different.

  • What if I clone disk Id. Would that work?

  • You can try it and see; I haven't so I can't say for certain it won't work. Whether it does or not, it's unsupported.
