MotherBoard Died (What would be the best step 1) RRS feed

  • Question

  • At the moment I don't know if it's the motherboard or CPU, but either way it will be a few weeks before I can get a new Motherboard for my "Vail" server.

The server has 1-bootable IDE drive 300GB, 2 usb drives

    My question is:

    1.      Can I setup a virtual "Vail" on my windows 7 laptop and read the data off the usb drives? (or is there a chance it will crash the data)
    2.      Is it safer to wait for a new motherboard and hope Vail will reboot as if nothing has happen? (The system is a Shuttle)

  • I found that "Vail" will not run in virtual mode (Windows 7). Virtual PC only runs in 32 bits, even if your Windows 7 is 64 bits.

  • If your virtualization tool supports USB passthrough, the first might work. Probably, though, just waiting will be the easiest thing to do. After all, you shouldn't have any data on your Vail server which isn't also somewhere else.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • I won't lose anything important. Just have to re-backup data.

Oracle's VirtualBox supports x64 guests as well as USB devices.

I'm using VMWare to test Vail.

When setup a virtual Vail, I found Vail asked to format my USB Hard Drive (This held the old Vail data) multiples of time. I came close in hitting by mistake "YES" to format. This feature is dangerous.

The feature of automatically formatting all drives during install is nothing new.  v1 did the same thing.  Just disconnect any drives you don't want to format before you install, then you don't have to worry.
