Windows 7 reporting as not genuine Windows RRS feed

  • I have Windows 7 Home Premium installed on my HP desktop, software was OEM and in place when I bought the desktop (Sept. 2010). It has recently started reporting that it's no longer genuine. I have checked the date and time - it's okay. I have tried to re-input my product code but the option isn't available on my System screen.

  • MS Support staff now working on this issue - and have been for two days, not sure how this will work out yet. Backing up data to external drives, just in case it's not a good outcome :-(

  • For those people who install SP1 and get this error, do the following:

    Step 1: copy down the 25 character product ID that is found on your windows CD or the windows sticker on your computer.

    Step 2: Go to Control Panel -> System and Security -> system

    Step 3: On the very bottom of the page, there is a "Change the product key" link, click on it and enter your 25 character product key

    Step 4: End of frustration

    It seems SP1 will disabled all windows activation and you need to re-activate windows. It took me 3 days to figure it out.

    I have OEM version of home premium as well.

  • As stated in the problem the option to "change the product key" doesn't appear on my System screen, it just states that my Windows is activated !!
