Partitioning a 3tb drive for Server Backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • I mistakenly (!?!) bought a 3tb drive to use as backup for my WHS'11 implementation -- without reading in this forum about the issues surrounding drives bigger than 2tb. :-( I've tried partitioning it into two 1.5 gig drives -- but when WHS initializes it for server backup it sees the whole drive (actually it seems to see the drive's USB adapter -- displays: "Seagate FA GoFlexUSB device") and deletes what I've created and makes a 3tb drive that it then can't backup to per its VSHD limitations. I've gone in after WHS has created its backup drive and "shrunk" it below the 2tb limit -- WHS has seen it as such, but still I get a "I/O error" when initiating a backup. I am probably missing something really simple ... but is there a way I can partition this drive (I've been using WS2008 Disk Manager), so that WHS sees and maintains two <2tb partitions so that I can use this drive for backup? -- Nat

  • Thanks Phil, Didn't quite read low enough in that post to get to the part of the 4K sector part. Thanks for pointing me in that direction. Marked your response as the "answer".
