... in that case, I think all I can really suggest is a repair install...
Download the SP1 Refresh for your language and edition from the links on these pages...
Heidoc -Microsoft DR Download links
The links are for downloads from the Digital River servers run for MS, so are about as safe as
you can get :)Once you have it downloaded, you then need to burn the DVD from it - use either the Windows Disk
Image Burner, or (better still) your favourite burning application at the slowest speed possible.Note that you do NOT 'drag and drop' the file to the disk, you must use the 'burn an image'
option from your app - or you'll end up with a useless coaster :)Once you have the disk burnt, check that it boots the (or any other) system OK - but do NOT start
the repair from there - you must start the repair from within a normal Windows boot.Follow the instructions in this tutorial - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html
- and they should help you get through it (it's not as difficult as it looks!)
Always ask questions first if you're unsure - either here, or in sevenforums.
Good luck with it!

Please open an elevated command prompt window and run the following commands - make a note of the number of files and folders in the summary athe the end of each, and post back with the results.
DIR C:\Windows /AR /S
DIR C:\Windows\System32 /AR /S
DIR C:\Windows\System32\7B*.* /ah
Also, please run and SFC....
SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.
Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

tried running SFC a couple times from the Admin window and both times it crashed with the error: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform requested operation" I have posted the log to:

Your best option in that case is to run the CHKDSK and SFC in offline mode from a Recovery Environment boot.
Reboot the computer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - one option should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.
Log into your normal account.
You'll get a set of options - pick the Command Prompt one.
At the command prompt, type DIR C:\
- if we're lucky this will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including the Program Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.
If not, try D:\ or E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)
type
sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows
where <drive> is the letter you found above.
Wait for the command to complete. (make a note of the response!).
Once it has, type EXIT and the pick the option to reboot.

Tried to run it in the Recovery Environment and had the same result. It ran for a while but the stopped with the same error message. Any other thoughts.... The system is very unstable with intermittent freezes.Friday, November 23, 2012 4:56 AM

Your symptoms sound like you have s 'stuck' pending.xml file
Please run the following command, and post the results.
DIR C\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml

I got "File not found"
Looked through the winsxs drive and I don't see it either. The winsxs folder is a ton of folders beginning with "x86_..." but no files visible
Friday, November 23, 2012 2:07 PM -
Hmmm - maybe it's a hidden file...
DIR C\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml /AH
see if that shows anything

in that case it must be something else blocking SFC.
Please run the following commands and post the results....

Got the message:
"Error: the system was unable to find the specified registry key or value."
I also went into the registry editor through MSCONFIG and could not find the "currentversion" path under hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft.
just a thought... I have an upgrade to Windows 8 that came with the machine (I only bought this in August.) What are the odds that the upgrade would solve my problems?
Thanks for you're help thus far, by the way!
Friday, November 23, 2012 6:18 PM -
With no data in 'CurrentVersion' I'm surprised that the machine boots at all - it's what holds most of the installation together! It means theat a repair install is the absolute minimum repair required, but that you may as well do a Recovery to factory settings - it'll take less time in the long run.
Just to check - please run the following commands and see what happens...
REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProgramFilesDir
Which is the first to give an error message?

OK so this is weird... so I stepped through your list and, low and behold, it returns a value for the currentversion path. I run indivigual files and they return the error back again. I then go back into the reg editor and, sure enough the currentversion path is again there. In the reg editor however, I can see the six files that you were looking for me to pull.
here is a paste of the command prompt session... (tried to put in a screenshot of the editor but was not allowed until account is verified)

Are the important response here (I got the original commands wrong in an attempt to avoid the long list of 'unrequired' data).
The only strange one there is the DevicePath data - please run the following command and post the results
DIR %SystemDrive%\SWSetup\Drivers
it doesn't exist on my system - but it may be part of the OEM setup

Interesting!
in my VM, %SystemDrive% is defined as C: (which means that it always returns the current folder, as far as I can tell)
Please run the following command and report the result....
echo %systemdrive%

That's correct - so let's change the entry that refer to the folder....
run the following command in an Elevated Command Prompt
REG ADD HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion /v DevicePath /t REG_SZ /d %SystemRoot%\inf /f
then reboot the machine and note ANY change in behaviour - then post a new MGADiag report.

Also, don't know if this adds to the puzzle, but there we a bunch of HP "apps" that come up during startup on the launch box. I had disabled them shortly after getting the machine. They are back again.

Also... noticed that the product key in the diagnostic does not match the key on the tag at the bottom of the computer???

OK - please try running SFC again now.
SFC -System File Checker - InstructionsClick on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy theCBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Also... noticed that the product key in the diagnostic does not match the key on the tag at the bottom of the computer???
Computers that come pre-installed with Windows from large manufacturers usually come with two Product Keys.
OEM SLP: This is the key that came in Windows (from the factory). It works by connecting to a BIOS flag (the SLIC table) found only on computers from that Manufacturer. It also checks for the existence of proper matching licenses in the OS itself. Once it sees both, it self-activates every time the machine is rebooted.
COA SLP: This is the key seen on the sticker located on the side, bottom or in the battery compartment of your machine. This key is for use if the OEM SLP self-activation stops working for whatever reason.

So it failed again in the same spot with the same error... I then tried again to run it in the recovery environment and got the message that the were repairs pending and I needed to reboot. I rebooted and still got the same message.

... in that case, I think all I can really suggest is a repair install...

I am not a computer programmer, so all these instructions seem foreign to me...but the same thing started happening to my computer within the last week.
The " not running genuine microsoft" message and the "hanging"
this sounds like something is wrong with WINDOWS and needs a fix, no? I don't have $200 to pay a computer person to fix--and the repair install above sounds difficult.

First please start a new question of your own, and include an MGADiag report - then we can see what is necessary.
It's quite rare for a repair install to be necessary.
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
