SrvRecovery.iso not bootable? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am testing Vail under VMWare workstation 7.0 on a Win7 Pro 64bit PC (Q9450 with 8GB of memory) + using the Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 version. - so far so good :-)

I have configure it with three drives and the System drive is excluded from the storage pool.

I have backed up the server and then powered it off.

In VMWare, I removed the system drive to emulate a drive failure and pointed the CD drive at SrvRecovery.iso and restarted the VM. However the VM won't boot off this iso - I have verfified the SHA1 and therefore know it is valid.

As a test, if I boot the VM from the RestoreCD.iso, that boots fine as obviously the initial install did. So I am wondering if there is something wrong with the .iso - Has anyone else booted successfully from this .iso?

  • Full server recovery feature is not fully implemented in this build. However, I have asked someone from the server backup development team to follow up with detailed instructions about what is/is not possible with server recovery. Should be there by tomorrow.

    Thanks for testing.

  • Per another similar question a few days ago, the server recovery scenario isn't complete in this version of Vail.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • That IMO should have been a priority in view of the fact I have had to
reinstall the system 4 times now because of it hanging/freezing - sometimes
due to plugging in a USB device (USB external DVD/CD drive for instance),
which I normally could do in v1 without it freezing up - and other times I
just don't have any idea why it freezes. I am up and running again now, and
I have now installed the log collector, so if it happens again I will try to
figure out why and file a bug report.

I had other freezes as well that was fixed by doing an image restore or by
just a repair by booting into the install DVD. I have not been able to keep
it running long enough yet to have even one each successful backup of 3
client computers - they often do not complete, or I get a freeze and before
they get a chance to do them.

I also tried that svr restore iso and it would not boot into it.

  • Hi Art,

if you are running on a server with a keyboard and monitor you can boot from the install media and click on the repair option instead of the new installation option in the setup wizard

this will launch the windows server native recovery wizard. We are replacing that with our own version but you can use it to perform a restore.  Documentation for windows server recovery also known as the windows recovery environment is on technet.

Have you posted the other issues you described anywhere else?

    thanks for testing.

I have just tested this and it has worked for me :-)

I restored the C drive to a virtual 65GB drive - it wouldn't recover to a 60GB drive - I guess it might have been short of a few MB. Well this is good news for me, as it looks as if I can use an 80GB SSD drive for my system drive, which will certainly save me some money when compared to a 160GB SSD drive.

  • Thanks.. yes I am using keyboard, mouse, and monitor on the server at this
time. There is just too much stuff to do that cannot be done otherwise to
not do so. Later when it is all stable I will revert to headless.

I will try your advice next time it freezes up.. provided I can even get
there. Often I cannot even boot into the server in order to do that, so I
have to boot into a disk (either the install disk or the repair disk) to do
a repair or restore from image (provided it has even made one yet).

If I have more trouble I will start a new thread and also file a report on
Connect. I have not mentioned this problem elsewhere. This last reinstall is
working pretty good so far. I have a couple of server backups now, and
manual backups for 2 clients (manual because the auto-backups for all 3
machines all failed last night) - and the 3rd one (also manual) is showing
5% now for about 2 hours - it is for the main machine that has considerably
more stuff on it than the other two).

  • When will this feature be fixed?  I have been using Vail for almost a month now and have decommisioned my old Home Server (it was constanly failing) and now have all of my data and backups on the the Beta version which has now crashed and will not boot into the recovery mode.  What did Micorsoft download last night as an update to crash the system?

    Not happy!

If you've got a backup of your server you should just be able to boot from
the install media and restore from backup. Failing that, simply detach all
drives except for your current system drive and then reinstall.

As far as not being happy, if you're not prepared to lose all of your data
then you shouldn't be running a prerelease version of the software. Sorry
but no sympathy here, comes with the territory.
