  • Probably any antivirus that can be installed on Windows Server 2008 will work. But there are no guarantees. Please try and let us know.

  • No. Microsoft Security Essentials is for Windows XP, Vista, and 7 only. It does not support Server products.

  • Hi

I have Comodo working ok It doesn't link into the Dashboard but that doesn't worry me

  • I am using NOD32 Antivirus Version 4.2.  Worked good with v1 and seems to be working fine with Vail as well.

  • I Install Avast 4.8 and it works. It even detected a minor virus in on of my files. BTW avast is very inexpensive.

  • Just a confirmation of the post above by ChuckinSanJose. I have installed Avast 4.8 whs version and it and it appears to be working fine. Updates and On Access scanning are all good. It can be installed as a 60 day trial. With a wee bit of luck the next Vail beta will be out before the trial runs out. Allowing a simple re-install. Assuming no problems appear during testing I will transfer my WHS V1 Avast licence when the RTM is released

I have also tried Clamav and while there were no apparent problems with it, not having on access protection limits its effectiveness.

  • You should note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.

That being said, check out Avast! Windows Home Server Edition.  http://www.avast.com/windows-home-server

It's not free but is designed specifically for Windows Home Server.  Has a WHS Console view that allows you to check the status of clients on workstations, etc...

Don't know if it is compatible with "Vail" yet.

      1.   The problem with Avast 4.8 it doesn't work with the dashboard. ( no plug in )

      2.   They haven  not upgraded  Avast 4.8 to 5.0  yet. (  no clue when )

      3.    They have eliminated the famaily pack also. ( bad  will cost more )

      4.    I hope Microsoft Security Essentials will  soon work on the server.

  • Hi here is how i have setup all my server and PCs

    1. Most of the best preventive measure is just to prevent hacks,
To make them very hard and 90% of them impossible , here is a excellent link how to do that, its the same way company's secure there networks.
(do it only works in the non home versions of windows XP/Vista/7/all server versions, and i would recommend upgrading to a other version)
    http://www.mechbgon.com/srp/
Its probably for some a bid hard to follow, and if you don't know how, ask someone to help you, but i would really recommend doing this.

ps. Also do not turn of UAC in win Vista/7  and don't blindly click yes when it pop's up (and yes i know its a pain, but so is getting hacked)

    2. Get a GOOD anti virus program !!!
AVG free only is not enough neither is Norton junkware

G-Data total care is a good program i can recommend, as it always ranks top in anti virus test's and is not to expensive specially if you take the 3PCs option
    http://www.gdata-software.com/online-shop/anti-virus-produkte/shop/46-private-users/963-g-data-total-care-2010.html
    Kasparski is also good option
    http://www.kaspersky.nl/kis
But wont run on server versions.
If you are on the cheap and don't wane spend 40 bugs a year get AVG free but then point 3 is not only highly recommend but a must, preferably run A-squared every time  before you start up wow

    3. No Anti virus software (AV) is perfect,
Get extra FREE versions of AV and do at least once a week a manual scan ore after bin browsing pr0n ore have installed cracked programs.
Also because these are all manual scan programs they wont slow you computer during gaming.

These are the minimum i would install:
    Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/
a-squared Free http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free. (AV program that works also on severs)
Spybot  search and destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html Also run the Immunize option it prevents files to be changed whit out you knowing it

A online virus scan is also something i would recommend once in a wile, House-call, ESET, Panda are good, kaspersky is offline making a new scanner but if back is properly one of the best.
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=online+virus+scan&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enNO358NO358&ie=UTF-8&aq=0&oq=online+vi

    4. A small but very nice program is, Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI)
Its a small program that checks version Nr of you programs and compare's it whit a list online for programs whit security updates, its very small and uses almost no memory and resources.
Its like windows update for the rest of your programs
    http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/

This all may seem to some of you over the top, but on the other hand getting hacked is no fun eider, and getting a keyloger ore that your PC is being used in a botnet.

And doing these manual scans is not that hard just start one when your are getting to sleep ore going away, and your PC is doing noting anyway, security its just a mind set, and a fact of live we have to live whit, ore get hacked ;-)

Hope this will help some people getting there security up to date.

  • This start the debate all over again. Do you really need an AV product on a home server?

Well, if you are just using it for yourself in your own home with clients that are already protected ... no, not likly.

If your like me and you have family members that connect from the internet and upload files then I would say definitally you need to have some kind of AV loaded on the server.  I love my family, but knowing them as I do they are not as vigilant in keeping their machines up to date with the latest virus defs, patches.

I'm a big fan of Avast but when I installed it on Vail and it slowed things down. I'm waiting for avast to confirm their position on Vail.

  • Avast 4.8 Home Server Editions seems to be running fine on my Vail server. What ‘things do
you find has slowed down? I have not noticed anything slow down here that I can determine.

  • Which version did you use? WHS Version?

    I will reinstall and see.

  • Panda Cloud AV is my favorite. It has the most unique way of detecting malware, etc, using the Cloud.  I just registered for the 1 month Panda Cloud Protection (it says WHS is compatible, so we will see shortly), and will attempt to install.  Will let you know, but if it works, I believe this is the Best solution for a server.  The old Antivirus model with the definitions on the system is flawed. Getting the cloud to check the file and quaranteening the file in the meantime makes it worthwhile.

Here's the link for the trial.

  • Thanks for the tip Art.

Tonight after work I Dl & installed MSE on the WHS Vail rig, after the PC restarted I noticed it had updated the definitions so I ran a quick scan.

What I have tested after installing MSE still works fine so I'll give MSE a thumbs-up.

  • In case anyone is interested....

On the Vail refresh, MSE (current and beta), Forefront, FEP  beta(next version of Forefront) all will not install. They all give the same error message that it cannot be installed on this operating system along with the same error code of 0x8004FF04.

Just wondered, now that we've hit RTM if there was any update on this?

As irong correctly stated neither version of MSE, nor the latest Forefront client will install.

I'm really not very comfortable running my WHS without any form of anti virus, especially now that we have WHSuTorrent for 2011.

So, all those of you running the RTM, what are you using, if anything?

    Ideally a free solution! ;)

  •  I have the original Forefront client running on the RTM. I was not able to get FEP 2010 to run on the final version.

If anyone has been able to get FEP 2010 to run on the RTM, I'd love to know how they did it.
