Using disk image to change system disk

Question
-
I am using Seagate ST31000340AS as system disk. ST31000340AS has potential to be impacted by the firmware issue which system can't detect the disk at system boot. I would like to exchange that so that I don;t use it for WHS system disk. I know that I may be able to do a system re-installation. But I understand that I will need to reconfig the system again.
In order to avois this, can I shutdown the system and take the system disk out to a second PC where I make a disk image of the ysstem disk and restore the image on another disk. ANd then take the new disk to WHS and boot from it. Is this possible?Wednesday, April 1, 2009 1:50 AM

Doing what you describe is unsupported. Further, some users have reported various problems with their servers after doing so. I would recommend you simply apply Seagate's firmware update to the affected disk.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Wednesday, April 1, 2009 3:20 AM

Do you think that I can just apply the firmware when the system is running? Could it cause data loss when firmware upgrade fails?Wednesday, April 1, 2009 2:14 AM

Please read the instructions on the Seagate site fully before attempting a firmware update. If you have questions regarding the fw update, you should ask Seagate and not this forum.
Thank you.

My WHS uses two ST3500320NS which were affected by the firmware bug. The patch from Seagate creates a bootable CD to install it. As such it runs outside of whatever OS you're using. Although I fretted while doing the updates, they went off without incident and WHS booted properly after it completed. Make sure to read all of the instructions at the Seagate site thoroughly before starting. Having an external backup of anything critical wouldn't be a bad idea.
Note that if the bug strikes, the drives are unuseable although Seagate has been said to offer to pay for data recovery services. So you should probably make that backup and do the upgrade as soon as practical.
