Live Mesh sync-ing pst files for web-based Outlook usage

General discussion
-
would like for Live Mesh to be able to sync my pst file(s) so that my Outlook usage is truly virtual and no longer held down to any one device. am wondering how/when Live Mesh and Office Live Workspace will all come together. Also wonder when Microsoft will make Outlook a completely web-based app. but that's a whole other dialogue. re: data - we have the Live Mesh to handle the .pst environs. i wonder how this can contribute like HyperOffice does (www.hyperoffice.com)Thursday, August 7, 2008 12:08 PM

I too need to sync my PST. I travel extensively and have a VERY wired house. Desktop in home office, desktop at office, laptop, media centers PC in master bedroom and den, desktop in basement for hobby (model railroading) and would like access to my email from each of them. Also would like to sync contacts only on my PDA. Is this excessive? Maybe, but its my life and I'll live it like I want.
I do this with my favorites. Why not my emails?!
Proposed work around until MS works out how to do this. ONE machine is the master sending and receiving the emails. Each of the others syncs with the cloud doing no direct connection to the mail server. Is it fool proof? No, but nothing is.
As it is now I use desktop remote or the mesh remote to accomplish this. It a messy solution I would like to streamline using Live Mesh.
Any ideas around the PST sync issue?????
Thanks,

I have been thinking about this too. Odds are this might be the best possible use of Mesh for many people, but I wonder if this would conflict with Office Live. It would seem Mesh is meant more for the home user and not for the business user. In addition I would need to have a lot more assurance about security before I would want my PST files sitting out in and synching with the cloud. For many people, the ability to lose trade secrets for their company is a dangerous risk.
All that aside I also wonder about the ability to do this from Mesh. Outlook locks these files while it is working with them so that they can be read/written and indexed. I would like these items to just sit in the cloud and only update my local search index. I have no need to constantly synch them unless I need them offline. By the time I archive them I can usually wait a few hours for the answer.Monday, February 16, 2009 3:48 PM -
Hey Scott,
I think the solution would be sync tomail items to Live Mesh from within outlook rather than simply trying to sync pst files. This could be done with an add-in to Outlook that ran in the background as a Live Mesh application.
You'd get better sync, and no overwriting of actual files, and it would allow Live Mesh to recognise emails as discreet items (that could be opened from the Live Desktop) rather than just one large (massive) pst file.

I have the same "wish"! I travel often between my house and my cabin and need to stay in touch. (I have been at my cabin now for a month and a half.) I currently use a flash drive to move my .pst file(s); but I sometimes forget--then I'm in trouble! Because of lightning and other considerations, I don't like to keep my computers plugged in when I am away, so remote sign-on is not practical. Finally, I don't go for "trick" solutions like .pst-to-.dat converstion! Since I don't share files with others, I don't need to worry about simultaneously acccessing files. Also, I password-protect my .pst file(s), so I am not really worried about having them on my skydrive; even if they break the pw, they might steal a joke, but no secrets!Friday, January 28, 2011 7:52 PM

Before I lock this thread, since this is about Outlook data files and synchronizing them, and this is a forum for Live Mesh Beta, which will cease to function at the end of March 2011, a comment and few suggestions.1. This limitation is due to the fact that the Outlook data file is fragile and can be quite large. To sync the data file, sync programs like Mesh would need to have exclusive access to the file and the *entire* file would need to be transmitted.
2. There are 3rd party programs that will sync the objects within the .pst file between computers. You still generally need to do this manually.
3. You can consider using an online email service with web access and large storage. Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc. come to mind. You can use Outlook to connect to your Hotmail account, if desired.
4. If you really need Outlook and use it extensively, as I do, consider a Hosted Exchange account. I use Sherweb.com for less than $10 a month.
