USB drive to SATA?

Question
-
I am out of space, and slots on my WHS machine. So I am going to replace a 300Gb internal SATA drive with a 2Tb drive. I plan to first add the new 2Tb drive to WHS using a USB docking station. Then I plan to use the WHS software to Remove a Drive and remove the 300 GB drive. My question: can I then move the 2TB drive from the USB docking station and put it inside the computer (in the old 300Gb slot)and use a SATA slot? Or does the 2TB added drive need to remain as a USB drive?Monday, April 12, 2010 6:44 PM

Yes, WHS stores identifier on the disk itself. So it should work

The only thing I can think of is that the SATA controller isn't compatible with 2TB disks? Might want to see if you can get a cheap PCI or PCIe SATA controller or try it on another system

Well, I do have a problem.
1. Add new 2Tb drive successfully
2. Removed old 300Gb drive sucessfully (Over 18 hours!)
3. Changed 2 Tb drive from USB to SATA
4. Bootup hangs at BIOS- BIOS apparently sees the drive, but doesn't know what to do with it.
5. Perhaps I should have done a quick format on the new drive when I first got it in SATA??
Ideas?

Nice catch! I drive that I was swapping out was attached to the motherboard. I found an empty SATA slot on a previously installed PCI controller- used it and BIOS saw the new HD. Thanks so much. AN easy fix :-)
On another note, I am now getting the File Conlicts warning- as I undersatnd it, I need to shut down all networked computers (that share the Photos file for screen saver), andlet DE do its thing- is that correct?

Nevermind- I had knocked a SATA cable loose on another drive. Fixed cable, rebooted- all is well.
Thanks again for your help
Onward...
