An unauthorized change was made to Windows RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I'm running Windows Vista on a new titanium iMac under Boot Camp on Leopard.  I also have Parallels software for running Vista inside of Leopard.  Parallels lets me boot my Boot Camp volume of Vista into Parallels to run it inside a window in Leopard.  Today I tried to run Vista through Parallels and the emulation would stop right before Vista starts to boot.  So I rebooted the machine to boot directly into Vista.  It starts up and I get the following error message.  I can't resolve the problem or follow the instructions because it wont let me get into the OS, it just has a "Learn more online" button that opens up a web browser.

An unauthorized change was made to Windows.

    Error: 0xC004D301
Description: The Security processor reported that the trusted data store was tampered.

What can I do to fix this?  Thank you.

  • I managed to get it working again.  I'm not sure what I did, but I went back into leopard and tried to run vista in parallels.  It started booting this time, and parallels said something about installing parallel's tools.  When it got into windows it gave me the same error message and wouldnt let me get to the start menu or taskbar.  So I closed it down, and tried to boot into vista using boot camp again.  This time it went all the way into windows, and let me access everything except for the control panel, and it still gave me the error message and said that my license was not valid.  I followed the activation instructions about running disk cleanup and rebooting so that it will ask for your license key again.  When I rebooted it did not ask for my license key.  I tried to validate again, and this time it said that it was not able to validate at this time because it could not determine whether my license was valid or not.  Then, I rebooted again, and this time it finally asked for my license key.  I entered it, and then it was able to verify my license and recognize that it is genuine.  Weird sequence of actions, but it worked for me.

  • Hello eablokker,

In order to recieve the best support, we request all users initially download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue" click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response message in this thread.

If you do not have access to the Start Button:

    1) Login to Vista and Click the option that brings up an Internet Browser. (in your case, the "Learn more online", link)

    2) Type: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 into the browser address bar.

    3) A window will come up asking if you want to Run or Save, Select Run

    4) When the program runs, Click the Continue button, then click the Copy button.

    5) Return to this thread by Typing: http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2925871&SiteID=25 into the browser address bar.

    6) In a reply post, Paste the Diagnostic Report.

    Thank you,

FYI: You can also access your computer by clicking the option that brings up an Internet Browser. (in your case, the "Learn more online", link). Type: C:\  in the browser address bar (where "C" is the dirve letter of your main hard drive). This will take you to the root directory of your main drive and you can then navigate to any folder on that drive.

I am having the EXACT same problem.

Macbook with OSX Leopard. Bootcamp. Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit edition. Installed Parallels. Everything running fine until I installed Vista SP1 RTM. Had to activate via phone today since I previously had this copy of Vista Ultimate on another laptop (which I wiped and sold). Booted into Leopard and tried to run Vista  under Parallels and it crashed. Tried several times and it crashed each time. Rebooted to try and get into vista natively later today my control panel stopped working (and welcome center, and system properties, etc...).

I have tried troubleshooting this with no success. I know how to run a command prompt as administrator. I have tried:

    - net start slsvc (sometimes will start momentarily, but then crashes when I look at services.msc)

    - slui 4 (doesn't give me any option to activate by phone)

    - slmgr.vbs -rearm (gives an 0xc004d301 error message)

    - deleted the tokens.dat file (per a recommendation on the net)

    - deleted the two files with really long file names in the c:\windows\system32\ folder

Now when I boot and log in, it will not run explorer at all. It only gives me the "learn more online" link or close, which logs me out.

I think Parallels did something that jacked up Vista. Or the Phone Activation I did today didn't take for some reason, maybe because there is a problem with Vista SP1 RTM.

    Here is my log file:
