Remote Desktop now will not connect to Windows Home Server

Question
-
Back in February 2014, Remote Desktop (RDT) would always connect to WHS after a short argument about the validity of the server security certificate. Now it just absolutely refuses to connect at all despite being offered the lowest security settings possible with Windows 7 Professional.
The current security certificate refers to a https URL but I am of course trying to connect using RDT to //HPStorage/ for which there is of course no such certificate as the box is sitting in front of me.
Rather than buy another certificate, which might work, is there any other way than with RDT to access this server?

Well, on Windows 8.1 Professional with Update 1 I just work with mstsc.exe (file date 8/22/2013, Product version 6.3.9600.16384) without any problems.
Can connect to both WHS 2011 and WHS v.1 via Remote Desktop.
Other than that you could also try Remote Desktop Connection manager, which allows to create a RDP console for multiple boxes.

Both versions should exist in W8.1, the "Modern UI" version (which if I recall, you have to download from the Windows Store) and the traditional Desktop version.

What error message do you get when RDP doesn't connect? Can you Ping it from your client by name?

You can change the settings of your RDP client:
Show Options/Advanced
If server authentication fails:
Select "Connect and don't warn me."Best greetings from Germany

I think that Microsoft have changed the software for Remote Desktop recently. The old mstsc.exe no longer works and so I cannot use the old tabbed dialog box as you suggest. The only options offered now are to connect to a remote https computer which it won't do as it is "not connected" or connect to an e-mail address which I don't really understand.
If I do try to connect using the computer name, it can find it but then says,
"The remote computer cannot be authenticated due to problems with its security certificate.
Security certificate problems might indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the remote computer.Windows cannot continue setting up this connection. Contact your workplace administrator for assistance."
I guess this is because the certificate says my_name.homeserver.com and the computer name is HPStorage so they don't match.
I will try again tomorrow, but it does not look very good at the moment.
Many thanks anyway Olaf,

So it may be that my version of mstsc.exe has got corrupted somehow, although I don't fully understand how it has got replaced by another similar function which calls itself "RemoteApp and Desktop Connections" but looks quite different?
However, your information should enable me to re-activate mstsc.exe which always used to work fine and I will be quite happy with that.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Olaf,
I checked with the System File Checker and yes, the original mstsc.exe is corrupt but the file checker couldn't fix it.
I tried the Remote Desktop Connection Manager which is absolutely brilliant, you could run a server farm with that! The connection was very quick with no problems about security certificates and the result is that I got the Remote Desktop back again and I am very grateful for that.
Thanks again,
Philip Knowles
