Is there a File Size Limit for Live Mesh Mobile? RRS feed

  • Question

  • First... AWESOME WORK! I've been waiting for a solid all-device infrastructure like this for a while!

Is there a File Size or File type Limit for Live Mesh Mobile? It seems to not want to sync a larger avi movie trailer that I'm using as one of my test files.

Update: It seems that there's a 10 MB file cap on the Mobile client.

  • 10mb Seems kind of low with today's large capacity SDHC, and Wifi, and 3g connections.    Would it be possible to have this as a user selectable threshold?

I have files which are bigger than 10mb I do like to sync to my phone.

a "File Type" filter would also be nice, so we can control what files we copy.   Otherwise people will just start renaming files to get around it, making it less usable.

  • I'm ok with 10 mb while Live Mesh Mobile is in this stage, but I'm really hoping that the size limits will change later on.

Some PDFs and PPT files that can be viewed (and presented with video out on phones like the Touch Pro) are usually larger than 10 mb.

  • Thank you for using Live Mesh Mobile and for sharing your suggestions. We'll investigate these ideas for our next release.

  • I, too, would like to see the maximum size limit to increase, or even be removed. I had anticipated using Mesh to sync my podcasts on a nightly basis. Sadly, however, the average size of my podcasts are 12MB.

  • I was also very excited about using Live Mesh Mobile to sync podcasts to my Treo.  A 10 MB filesize limit makes this impossible.  I would love to see this changed.  Thanks!

  • I agree it's awesome and it would be great to increase the filesize limit > 10 meg.  75-100 would be great.  Even if you only synced larger files over wifi and not the cell data service.  I would like to see an option so that you could set it only to sync over a wifi connection for those of use that aren't on a all you can eat plan.

  • If I could add my vote too, larger file size please... :-)

I'm toying with getting a new iPod, but realising I mostly use my existing one for podcasts, and having seen the mobile photo-sync work so well, I though it would be perfect for auto-syncing my podcasts over too. My podcasts folder is a little under a gig, and synced from my PC up to the mesh without a hitch. However, not one of the podcasts made it to the mobile. I checked to see if there was a file size limit, and of course learned there was, so I checked the podcasts, and they all seem to average between 35-60MB each.

Now I'm not planning to fill my mesh with them, as I listen to old ones, they'll get deleted and new ones added, but it's likely to sit at around the gig mark. I have 3GB data on my airtime contract, and can flick WiFi on for speed when I'm home, so it should work great. I don't know if there's a technical reason for the limit, or if it's just a beta thing, but please, please consider lifting it before I give in to temptation and buy an iPod Touch :-(

Thanks for a great product/service just the same ;-)

    Steve

  • Also chiming in that I would like to see the file size limit be user customizable (or just raised to something much larger).  I have an 8 GB SD card and unlimited internet through Sprint, so 10MB is very small for me, especially when I'm trying to sync up podcasts downloaded at home.

Also, I would like to see the ability to modify the file filter.  I frequently need a way to send EXEs of apps I'm working on to my phone and Live Sync is the perfect solution.  I can sync the bin folder and as soon as I compile, I can hit sync in mesh and poof, my app is now on my phone!

Thanks for an awesome app, Live Mesh Team!!!!

  • I need higher limits to.
I was pulling out my hair trying to figure out why a 17mb cab wasn't syncing until i thought hmm could they really have put a limit on file size in this day and age?

  • An observation about the file size limit. I was concerned that while folders were syncing the contents were not. I saw this post about file size and the first few files I was trying to sync were too large, fair enough. But the second folder contained only shortcuts (favorites) and the folders and subfolders were there but no files.
I removed the big files from the first folder (at source) and bingo, all the other files started to sync. Therefore, there are clearly two streams happening here, firstly the folder structure and then the files. I'm a little concerned that a file that is too large can effectively bottle neck the rest. Is this by design?

    Hi,

I'm following up on this report with our Mobile developers and they had a question: How large were the big files in the first folder that seemed to block the rest from syncing?

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Please chime me in to the list of people wanting to know more information about why such a limit was made, whether it is just in the meantime during the initial betas, and later expected to change; or why if it isn't going to change, was this made such a small amount? There have been a lot of really important things mentioned, and PPT files and PDF's are the usual large files that you need to be able to sync. It would really stink if you were working on a powerpoint, and it was just under 10MB, and then created a few new slides and this caused it to not sync because it went over the 10MB limit.

I would much prefer at least a 25MB cap, if not even larger for some files that are supposed to be that large, i.e. backup files.

    Any hope?

    Thanks.

    Andrew,

  • Chiming in on this too.  The file size limit is way too low.  Also if I have files that exceed the limit of 10 mb the others that are below that limit do not sync.  Also there isn't clear notification of what files don't sync and why.  Why would it not be unlimited.  I love live mesh and my windows phone but this makes it kind of useless for me when I can't transfer a lot of files to my phone especially music.  I think that is a really big problem for people who are really using live mesh on their phone.  Please fix soon.

My guess is that it is, but we won't be told anything until it actually is increased.

    Hi tfarley,

Rest assured: we consider all the suggestions/feedback that we receive from our customers. :)  In fact, many of the changes that have been made to Live Mesh since we opened as a limited Tech Preview last April have been a direct result of feedback from our customers.  Increasing the file size limit is one of the more popular Live Mesh for Mobile requests, so it's definitely being talked about.  Steve is correct that we do not have anything to announce at this time, though.  One way to give your request more visibility would be to add it to our Suggestions sticky - and it would be even better to add the suggestion to Connect, then post the feedback ID to the sticky so that others can vote on it.

    Thanks,

    Ben.
