Can you add NAS disks to WHS for server data backup? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Dlink DNS-323 with 2 -500GB drives on my home network.  I would like to add it to WHS for use as Server backup drive.  Is this possible?

I really do not want to pull the drives out of the DNS-323 and put into the WHS unit - seperation for fire/flood/lighthing/etc.

No, it's not possible.  The drives must be local (not network).  What you can do is setup a script that copies from the server to the NAS using an app like RoboCopy or SyncToy.  It would involve installing the app on the server (which is unsupported), but it works.

  • As a paying customer, I think this is a miss in the product.   Should be able add network drives for server backup.

Is this capability being considered for a future enhancement?

  • Could you please submit this as a product suggestion on Connect? It's a good idea. :) However, please realize that the current behavior is by design. Windows Home Server expects that all hardware will be local, and that it will have full control of that hardware. There are a very large number of potential issues with using a remote device in the server.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
