Told I have to pay for XP Pro... Twice!! ??? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I live in Australia.

I used to work in IT hardware distribution and purchased an OEM XP Pro SP2 with some component hardware from another wholesaler contact no longer in business.  This other wholesaler was just that, a wholesaler... not a system builder.  They just sold XP Pro by the box full!

I built my own desktop machine.

I have 2 machines, a Laptop and Desktop, and I have to reinstall XP on the desktop....  again!   Am running VM on the laptop to test a new SP3+hotfix slipstreamed XP Pro Setup.

When I tried to activate the fresh VM installation, it said, "This license has exceeded the activation limit blah blah...  contact Microsoft"

Well, I did.  Microsoft Technical support say I have to go back to the now, non existant wholesale company I originally purchased the OEM XP Pro CD from and BUY another CD with a fresh key!

    This is absurd!!!

Why do I have to pay for a product twice???

Unfortunatly this sounds like a licensing concern and the WGA Forum are not the experts in this area.
