Windows 7 Counterfeit Issue...Help Me to Get Legitimate RRS feed

  • Question

  • OK...I was stupid and naive, and bought a Windows 7 Ultimate package from an eBay seller who swore on his mothers grave that it was genuine. It activated fine, and worked from early June till last week, when my desktop went black and I got the dreaded message that my Windows was not genuine and my key was blocked. Like a lot of people, this was the 'Ingram Micro' package that is now so suspect. Way too long to go back to the eBay seller, so looks like that was an expensive lesson.

I bought the retail package because I didn't know at the time if I was going to use the 64bit or 32 bit version. Now that I see that the 64bit version works just fine, I want to buy an OEM disk from a reputable place (Newegg) and use the key to get legitimate. But I fear that the key included with the OEM disk will not work with whatever version of software I ended up loading from the eBay seller. I really, really, REALLY do NOT want to reload Windows. It takes days to get things sorted out, with all the stuff that I have to transfer. It's just a nightmare...

So, can anyone tell me if I can use a key from an OEM package? Here's the info from the MGAdiag routine:

  • You are correct, the key you received from ebay is an MSDN key and has been blocked.
Regarding Windows, if you absolutely need to use an OEM license, then you will have to back up and do a clean installation.  The only way to NOT have to do a clean installation is to take Carey's advice and buy the WGA Kit, which is a Genuine W7U product key emailed to you immediately and a follow up mailing of reinstallation disc(s).
To clarify this, you can use an OEM key without reinstalling, the physical media is the same between upgrade, retail and OEM purchases. That being said, the DVD you received from ebay could have been altered so it may be wise to reinstall for safety reasons.

  • Hello EchoWars,

I noticed a problem with your Office installation, too:

    OGA Data-->

Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 - 108 Invalid VLK

The above means that your Office is a nongenuine Volume Licensing installation that was done with a KeyGen counterfeit product key that was never issued by Microsoft.

If your purchase of Office was a packaged product that is labeled (outer package, discs, etc) Office Professional 2007, it too is a counterfeit product.

The good news is Microsoft has a complimentary replacement program for Office.  Go to www.microsoft.com/genuine, click on the Validate Office button, and when Office fails, on that page look for the link to the Complimentary replacement on the right side of the web page.

Believe it or not, the EZ Transfer Wizard in W7 is pretty good--it does not transfer application installations per se but it does a nice job of transfering all of your customized settings and of course your data.  It can transfer to a file on an external disk or network drive, so you can use it to backup before a clean installation.  So, if you have to use an OEM license, and you're going to have to uninstall the bogus Office anyway, you might as well do a clean installation.

  • So Cary & Dan say that I need a full retail package, and David says no. I've ordered a full retail package from Newegg regardless, since I'm tired of Mickey-Mousing around and want this resolved pronto.

@Dan - "I noticed a problem with your Office installation, too"

Yeah, well, one disaster at a time. It wasn't until I ran the MGAdiag that I saw that. I feel like a complete dumb@$$. At any rate, the Office discs and packaging were amazing copies. I couldn't believe they weren't from MS. But I've already gone through the procedure, and the software & documentation is on the way to MS in Erie.

  • Hello EchoWars,

Yes, the Office counterfeits that purport to be Office Professional 2007 but are actually Office Professional Plus 2007 Volume Licensing counterfeits are very "good."

Please post back when you get your free replacements from Microsoft.  We have had people tell us that replacements had been received as quickly as two weeks, even though the "official" time could be as much as six weeks.
