Genuine Advantage Validation will not complete - error RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have encountered problems with Genuine Advantage Validation when trying to download an updated version of DirectX following installation of the 'bioshock' game demo. The error message (number 80080299) states that there is an unknown error. Looking on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916247 I cannot find a reference to that error code and so suspect it is not the validation process per se that is failing. I have tried the help line without success, after a number of calls (each taking 30 minutes or more) they said they could not solve the problem and that I should try the computer vendor (Evesham). They are similarly in the dark and so I am left without being able to validate my copy of Windows XP - which has been happily running on the PC for the last 18 months or so.

As a last resort I'm submitting some diagnostics here, any suggestions welcome.

From running the diagnostic software downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/Validate.aspx?displaylang=en I get the following...

This may be an issue with your XML services on your computer. If you compare your diagnostic report with others on the forum, you will notice that you are missing a bunch of text at the bottom of your report. We call this the XML Blob. We have found that the 299 error in conjunction with the missing XML Blob means that either that the file msxml3.dll is unregistered (which means the registry key  ‘HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSXML.DOMDocument’  is missing) or msxml3.dll is missing/corrupt.

To fix your issue, follow the below steps:

    1) Click 'Start' button, then 'Run...'

    2) In the Run window, Type: regsvr32 msxml3.dll  <Click OK>
(Note: This will register the msxml3.dll and the registry entry ‘HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSXML.DOMDocument’ will be generated)

If this does not work, the msxml3.dll may be missing or corrupt. Follow the below steps, in that case:

    1) Go to the 'Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7 (SP7)' download page at  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=28494391-052b-42ff-9674-f752bdca9582&DisplayLang=en

    2) From the files available, download “msxml3.msi”

    3) Double click the file and follow the steps to install.

    4) After the install is complete, click 'Start' button, then 'Run...'

    5) In the Run window, Type: regsvr32 msxml3.dll  <Click OK>

  • I've tried the steps suggested but regsvr32 msxml3.dll returns a failure with a code of 8x80004005 in each case (i.e. running it both before and after downloading the .msi package).

    Does this help at all?

  • Ken,

The error message (8x80004005) means one or more Windows files are modified or corrupted. Unfortunately you need to re-install Windows on the computer. Please back up all of your information such as:  picture files (jpeg, bmp, gif etc), word documents, Excel files, Access databases and bookmarks to name a few.

Please review the following website for installing Windows XP:  http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/install.mspx

Should you need further assistance re-post in this link.  Take care ken.

  • For what it's worth, I am having similar problems.  Can't validate.  I just tried downloading and installing the msxml SP7 msi file.  During installation I received a message about permissions problem access a registry key at HKLM\Software\Classes\XML and sure enough I went there and couldn't even view the key.  As it turns out there are MANY other keys that I can't even view as well.  I am logged in as admin.  Have tried safe mode login as well.  So something (an installed APP perhaps) did some serious messing with reg key permissions.  So I am off to find out if there is a way to restore permissions to default or something.  First I will try a system restore to a point way in the past and see if that works.  Otherwise, I will go have another cup of coffee and a smoke.

  • Hello KRide,

Did you try the process which was mentioned in Dan's post earlier? This would fix the XML problems. Also please run the MGA Diag tool and post your results here for us to analyze. This will help us provide you with a resolve. Here is the guidance:

Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you,
