Scan Disk fails, Defrag does not complete

Question
-
Hello
I have had my laptop which runs Windows XP Media Centre for just over a year. Over the last 2 months it appears to be very slow so I check the Microsoft Website and did as it said. I have done check disc and tried defrag, however!!
Scan Disk does not complete in windows or if you restart into it. When I restart into a scan disk it gets to the point of validating files and stops at 16%....not sure why??
If I ignore that and try a defrag it appears to get to 3% and stop as well. The only way to get out of that is to turn the laptop off!!!
To be honest I don't like Windows XP Media so I thought I would install my Windows XP Pro edition I have.
If I boat up into the install, it does not think I have a hard drive??
If I start the install in the current windows operating system it does not like my Windows XP Pro key or the key on the bottom of the laptop (tried that cos I was very confused why my Win XP Pro would not work?)
I have run your tool and noticed the Key on it is completely different to the one on the bottom of the laptop?????
I want to install my Win XP Pro edition which my key does not appear to work??
I am happy to give you more info but was not sure what to give you. I would also like to note that the Win XP Pro is a genuine CD and ordered it over the internet from Microsoft directly.
If you know how to fix my current problem I am happy to do so....if you don'y can you help me fix the problem with the Key?
Cheers
