Can I subscribe to a thread even if it isn't mine?

Is there a way to subscribe to threads that I am interested in even if I didn't start them? There are a couple that I have found interesting and want to follow, but I want an easy way to keep track of them.

Is this the purpose of tagging? It seems to be a way to keep track of threads that aren't in My Threads.

What is the purpose of tagging? It seems like it can be used to create shortcuts to threads. Is this the intention?
