settings to allow wireless adapter RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a D-Link router that has been working fine with my main PC and my second PC - they are both connected by cable. Now I have a third PC with a wireless adapter, made by NetGear. The icon on the task bar indicates I have a connection and that the signal is good. However, none of my programs can access the internet. Is there a setting in Live OneCare that will tell the router / firewall to let the wireless adapter through? Thanks

  • If you are unable to connect to the Internet wirelessly with the OneCare firewall turned off, you may need to configure the wireless side of your router following the manufacturer's instructions. Once you've set that up, you can configure the wireless adapter to match.

With the OneCare firewall off, if you still cannot connect, it isn't OneCare preventing the access.

  • I've moved this thread from the wireless security topic to the firewall topic since this is your only wireless adapter. If, however, you let OneCare configure the wireless security on the wireless router, you will need to configure the wireless adapter to use those settings. Type "Wireless Security" in Instant Support for OneCare and the steps are explained there.

  • Sorry - Instant Help. Click on Help in OneCare, and then show more topics, that opens Instant Help on the web. Alternatively, go to http://onecare.live.com -Help Center and then click Instant Help in the Technical Support section. The US direct link is here:  http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-us/support/default.htm

Here are the actual topics (I can't link to them)

Other computers won't connect to the Internet after the wireless router is secured

After you use Windows Live OneCare to help secure a wireless network, you may have trouble connecting other computers to the network.

To resolve this issue, you must configure other computers on the network with your network key.

Add a computer or other device to a wireless network

You can add a computer or device to your wireless network either manually or by using the Add a PC wizard or manually.

Add a computer to a wireless network with the Add a PC wizard in Windows Live OneCare
If you used Windows Live OneCare to help secure a wireless network, you can automatically add another computer or device to the network.
    1. On the computer that you used to help secure the wireless network, open OneCare, and then click Change Settings.
    2. On Firewall tab, click Advanced settings.
    3. On the Network connections tab, click the wireless network that you want to add the computer to, and then click Details.
    4. Click Add a PC, and then follow the steps in the wizard.
Add a computer to a wireless network manually

    For Windows XP:

    1. On the computer that you want to add, click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
    2. Click the wireless network connection, and then click View available wireless networks.
    3. From the list of available wireless networks, click the name of your wireless network, and then click Connect.
    4. When you're prompted, type and confirm the network key for your router, and then click Connect.

    For Windows Vista:

    1. On the computer that you want to add, click Start, click in the Start Search box, type ncpa.cpl, and then press ENTER.
    2. From the list of available networks, right-click the name of your wireless network, and then click Connect/Disconnect.
    3. Click the wireless network that you want to connect to, and then click Connect.
    4. When you're prompted, type and confirm the network key for your router, and then click Connect.
Add a device to a wireless network manually

To add a device to a newly secured wireless network, follow the instructions in the manufacturer's manual for the device. If you need more help, contact the manufacturer of the device.

    Note

You must enter the SSID and network key to add a device.

Find your network name and network key
To add a computer to a wireless network if you used the Add a PC wizard in Windows Live OneCare:
    1. On the computer that you used to help secure the wireless network, click Change Settings.
    2. On Firewall tab, click Advanced settings.
    3. On the Network connections tab, click your wireless network, and then click Details.
    4. The SSID and network key appear in the Security Information area.
    Note

If you added a computer or a device to the network manually, read the instructions in the manufacturer's manual, or contact the manufacturer of the router for information about how to obtain the network name and network key.

    Note

Changing the security settings on the router will disconnect any computer or device that was previously connected to the router.
