Your installation of Office Professional Plus 2007 on your Dell Inspiron computer is a nongenuine installation.  It is a volume licensing installation that was done with an Invalid Volume Licensing Key.  An Invalid product key is a product key that was made with a pirating program known as a Key Generator, or keygen, for short.  This product key is Invalid because it was never issued by Microsoft.

Normally, legitimate users of Volume Licensing editions of Office are associated with larger business, educational, or governmental organizations.  If that's you, please contact your organization's IT support staff for further assistance.

If your use of this installation of Office Professional Plus 2007 is not associated with a larger business, educational, or governmental organization, and you purchased the installed copy of Office Professional Plus 2007 thinking that it was a retail license to be sold to individual consumers, it is likely that you are a victim of software piracy or counterfeiting.  As an individual consumer, you should never have been sold Volume Licensing (VL) materials such as the VL installation CD, and you certainly should not have received an Invalid Product Key for Office Professional Plus 2007.  You should have been sold Genuine retail licensed software.

If so, your first course of action is to confront your seller with this information and demand either a full refund or to receive the genuine software you paid for.

If the seller refuses to help, please file a piracy report at www.microsoft.com/piracy.  Also, depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer or for the Office Genuine Advantage discounted offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC  If you think that you qualify for the Genuine Office Offer, apply for the Offer thru the Learn More Online link that the OGA Notifier is displaying.

Your installation of Office SharePoint Designer 2007 may also be a nongenuine installation.  As you can see in the snippet above, the mgadiag utility is showing that the Product Key used to install Office SharePoint Designer 2007 is genuine.  However, the license for this installation of Office SharePoint Designer 2007 is also a Volume License (as shown by the PID and PID Type reported above:  <Pid>89394-704-4560015-63623</Pid><PidType>14</PidType>).  If you do not have a current and valid Volume Licensing Agreement to run Office SharePoint Designer 2007, your usage of Office SharePoint Designer 2007, regardless of whether the Product Key is Genuine or not, is a nongenuine usage.  The fact that the Product Key for Office SharePoint Designer 2007 is still Genuine means that the organization that originally purchased the Volume License for that Office SharePoint Designer 2007 Product Key is still in Good Standing with their Volume Licensing Agreement.  That Product Key is rightfully their Product Key, and no one else's.  Volume Licensing keys cannot be sold when the computer is sold.

  • My copy of Office is in full MS packaging. How can I tell if the media and packaging are Volume Licensing products? The software worked with no problem when I originally installed it several months ago, and when I moved it from my old computer (now broken) to my new one. I only received this issue when I had to get a new hard drive, and reinstalled it a third time. Could this be the problem?

As for Sharepoint Designer, I installed it directly from the MS website (I believe it is now available for free). Do I have to pay for it now?

  • Hello mmarvi,

The best site that I know of for learning what genuine Microsoft product looks like, learning what to check for, and seeing samples of differing quality levels of counterfeits, is the Microsoft site www.howtotell.com  After closely examining the samples shown on the site and comparing them to your materials, you may be able to see some indicators of counterfeit software, but maybe not, as some of the counterfeits are very "well" done.

The proof is in what is installed.  If the package and CD say its Professional, but the installation puts down InfoPath and Communicator, then we know for sure that your materials are not a retail license Office Professional 2007 and that they are volume licensing materials for Office Professional Plus 2007.  Pro Plus has two programs that Office Pro does not, Communicator and InfoPath, and the Outlook in Pro Plus is Outlook only, while the Outlook in Pro is Outlook with Business Contact Manager.

I would encourage you to click on the Learn More Online link to submit a counterfeit report and to submit your materials for evaluation and possible complimentary replacement.

Regarding Share Point Designer, I just checked and it is now a free program.  I would have to guess that at the time you installed it, it was still being distributed under Volume Licensing channels thus the VL product ID.  Since it is now freely distributed, you can ignore what I posted about Share Point Designer.

I've checked the site. One thing I noticed is that my copy of office is an international one (I go to Europe regularly). Could this be the problem?

    Hello mmarvi,

Unfortunatly, no. That Product Key was never created or released by Microsoft or any of it's subsidiaries.

    Thank you,
