Dreaded 0x80180114 Error Message When Validating Office 2003 Installed on 2 Computers RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I purchased a genuine copy of Office Professional 2003 a few years ago and installed it on my primary computer without incident.  At the time, I was able to validate and update it with no problems.  The software clearly shows that it is licensed to me with an ID number.  Tonight, I decided to load that same copy on my laptop, which appears to be accordance with the EULA:

1.1       Installation and use.  You may:

                (a) install and use a copy of the Software on one personal computer or other device; and

                (b) install an additional copy of the Software on a second, portable device for the exclusive use of the primary user of the first copy of the Software.

After loading the copy on my laptop, I received this error message 0x80181114 because the product key was blocked by Microsoft.  Meanwhile, the software shows as properly licensed to me on my laptop with an ID #.  As a note, I aborted the first installation on my laptop because I had used my middle initial on the second install and wanted it to be consistent with the original which does not have my middle initial.  Meanwhile, the install on my laptop shows my name with the middle initial which may be part of the problem considering I actually typed the product key in twice while installing it the second time on my laptop.

After reading several previous posts on the subject, I ran the Diagnostic program and received the following result:

I see from the code that the reason for Office being blocked was because of VLK 2 which has to do with a volume license.  This is entirely possible since I purchased the software from someone who had many copies for sale.  On the other hand, the 114 code is very surprising to me.  I remember that the software originally passed genuine validation when it was first purchased.

Did I create this problem when I installed a second copy of the software on my laptop in excess of the volume license that the reseller had with you?  If that is so, how can I remedy this problem since the EULA that I agreed to clearly states that I can install Office on both my primary PC and a secondary portable device that is for my exclusive use.

Thank you for your quick response.

  • Daren,

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is and why you are not passing validation. Unfortunately, the product key used to install the Office Suite is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  As a rule, VLK editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VLK editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer. The following website can provide you with more information

     https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx

This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer.  You will need to uninstall Office before any further complications occur from being non-genuine. As a customer there are available options you may choose for a resolution. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take.

First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx  who have become victims. Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs. We CANNOT determine the "Quality" level of non-Genuine submissions and cannot guarantee such a thing here on the forum. We have a 3rd party registered Cryptography lab who evaluates EVERY (really!) submission for the High-Quality Counterfeit replacement program - as they have a pre-determined subset of items they look for.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

  • Daren,

I did answer your question regarding the error code which you received. There are situations which can cause Windows and Office to become non-genuine. Let me give one example. Have you taken your computer in for maintenance? Customers have taken in their systems along with all the software received when purchasing their system. The customer picks up the system and viola' no problems whatsoever until they need to download an update or even a template used with MS Office. Suddenly their system is non-genuine. The customer's computer was not installed with their software but a blocked version of a product key. Also the software could work for several weeks, months or even a year or more then suddenly becomes blocked. Volume licensing (VLK) are purchased/issued to large corporations, governments, and schools for example in order to make software installation easier for the mass computers located within their areas. In turn if the key becomes compromised then the government, school etc requests Microsoft to block that key and reissue another key.

Hopefully this has provided just one example as how this may happen.  Please run the diag test Dan mentioned and post here in the forum so I may analyze your particular situation.  Thank you very much and have a great weekend.

Please feel free to submit a piracy report. My previous post I provided information for you. Hope this has provided more information for the many possibilities as how software can become non-genuine.

    Thank you,
